Potsdam Conference
From July 17 to August 2, 1945, Allied leaders met.The President of the United States, Prime Minister Winston Churchill of England, and Premier of the Soviet Union gathered to demand the surrender of Japan and set up for postwar Europe. Each leader tried to get the strongest position and the most influence for his own country. The Potsdam Conference set up a competition between capitalist Western powers and the communist-controlled Soviet Union. This grew into the Cold War. -
Korean War
On June 25th, 1950 the North Koreans attacked Southward across the 38th parallel to start the Korean War. Soon, the United States decided to step in and send troops to push North Korea back away from the South, in order to prevent them from gaining land. After the retreat of the North, the South had entered the North only to anger China, which caused China to join the war. Finally on July 27th, 1953 peace was finally made after both representatives neither lost or gained much ground. -
Vietnam War
1954,the year the Vietnam War started with the country split into two with millions of lives lost overall. 1957 rebels in South Vietnam fought Diem’s government, the US took on to Diem’s side because they hated communism. the early 1960’s, a group of communist called the Vietcong gained control of South Vietnam. August 1964 North Vietnam attacked an United States warship, which caused the congress to expand the State’s role.In August of 1974 the countries signed an agreement to stop fighting. -
Suez Crisis
On July 26th, 1956 the Egyptian President nationalized the Suez Canal. The start of the Suez Crisis happened when the Americans and the British went back on their promise to give Egypt enough money to build a dam, this was because the two allies were afraid of Egypt getting close to Czechoslovakia. On December 22nd the United Nations evacuated the British and French troops. Finally, Israeli forces withdrew on March 1957. -

October 4th,1957 the Soviet Union launched the first artificial satellite,tension between the Soviet Union and the United States rose.Around 1957-1959 the International Council of Scientific Unions called for a satellite launch.December of 1957 the United States suffered a setback when their artificial satellite blew up.On January 31st,1958 the United States finally launched their first artificial satellite after the fear of the Soviet Union advancing in their technology finally got to them. -
Cuban Missile Crisis
Starting in October 1962 was a 13-day political standoff between the United States and Soviet Union because of the installation of nuclear armed missiles in Cuba. The next day, October 28th, an American plane was shot down over Cuba, soon after the crisis drew to a close. If the missile from Soviet Union were to be launched it would alter the complexion of the nuclear rivalry between the US and Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, which the Americans were dominating at the moment. -
NATO/Warsaw Pact
May 14th, 1955 is the date of the signing of the Warsaw treaty between Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union. In 1956 an uprising occurred in Hungary but was shut down by the Soviet Union.The nations regarding the Warsaw Pact fell away because of the reform policies. In 1990 Soviet troops left from countries Czechoslovakia, Poland, and Hungary.31st of March 1991 the Warsaw/NATO leaders declared they were “no longer adversaries,” ending the Cold War. -
Glasnost/Perestroika
In the late 1980’s a policy was issued by the Soviet Leader in order to overcome inertia in the Soviet Political and Bureaucratic apparatus, maintaining their status, This enlarged Political Freedom. In the Mid 1980’s a program was instituted to moderate and control reform that would revitalize the stagnant Soviet government. This obstructed the program by the Economic Bureaucracy in fear of loss of it’s loss of power and privileges.
