  • Yalta Conference

    Yalta Conference
    Allied leaders FDR, Churchill & Stalin agreed to govern Germany jointly after the war. It was known as the Truman Doctrine. It was a root of conflict that started the Cold War. A gaspire theme could be geography because "The Big Three" split Germany's geography between France, US, Britain, and Russia.

    When Greece and Turkey are in danger of falling to communist insurgents, Harry Truman requested $400 million from Congress in aid to both countries. It was a successful effort, it limited communism to places that were already effected by it. A gaspire theme would be economical because they gave resources to another country.

The Iraq wars can all lead back to the Cold War, Iran’s location between the USSR and the Persian Gulf, and the presence of major oil reserve, made Iran very important during the Cold War. Global military and ideological competition between the United States and the Soviet Union also made it tough of Iran and surrounding countries.

    Marshall Plan
    U.S. Secretary of State George Marshall proposes a massive aid program to rebuild Europe from the ravages of World War II. Nearly $13 billion in U.S. aid was sent to Europe from 1948 to 1952. The Soviet Union and communist Eastern Europe decline U.S. aid, citing "dollar enslavement." A gaspire theme would be economical, the U.S. gave Europe money to support them.

    Berlin Blockade and Airlift

    U.S. and British planes airlift 1.5 million tons of supplies to the residents of West Berlin. After 200,000 flights, the Soviet Union lifts the blockade. A gaspire+ theme would be political, the Soviet Union blockaded Berlin to starve the people and take control of Germany completely.

    Soviet response to Marshall Plan established 1949. The purpose was to provide aid to communist nations so that they would not take money from the US. A gaspire theme could be political because the Russians wanted to counter the US with more communism.

    Creation of North Atlantic Treaty Organization
    The NATO was formed by the USA. It was a military alliance. It was a pledge to protect and support one another if ever attacked, USA, Canada, Brit, Fr, & 8 others in West. A gaspire theme could be intellectual because the countries were planning ahead, in-case war were to break out.

    The Korean War

    N. Koreans crossed the 38th parallel in 1950 & hoped to unite Korea as a Communist nation.The U.N., led by the U.S. forces came to the aid of South Korea.Communist China and the USSR gave aid, military support and weapons to the North. NATO forces led by the U.S. pushed the North Koreans up to the Chinese borders. The nation split into North and South Korea at the 38th parallel as it was before the conflict. A gaspire theme could be geographic because the war ended and Korea was split into two.

    How the People Lived

    During the Cold War the world began to see history being reflected in culture, through music, movies, books, television, sports, social beliefs, and behavior. The Cold War was filled with nuclear war threats. Many works use the Cold War as a setting, the work would be fiction conflict between the U.S and the U.S.S.R. It was the first time Cold War themes enter the new culture as a public entertainment. This connects to culture because people could begin to "learn" from what they see around them.
  • Warsaw Pact

    Warsaw Pact
    Soviet Union led the military alliance. Soviet Union forced 7 Eastern European “satellites” to join. Any attempt to leave the pact would be seen as disloyal. A gaspire theme could be intellectual, the Soviet Union tried to counter the US NATO.
  • The Cuban Revolution

    The Cuban Revolution
    Cuban nationalist Fidel Castro overthrew a corrupt government led by Fulgencio Batista. Castro took government control over all major industries and installed a totalitarian communist regime with the support of the Soviet Union. The United States supported and trained 1,000+ Cuban exiles to overthrow the communist Castro government in April 1961. A gaspire theme would be social because the “Bay of Pigs Invasion” failed and US cut off all ties with Cuba.
