The Iron Curtain
The term "The Iron Curtain" was first used in Winston Churchill's speech talking about how the Soviet Unions wall could be a serious threat to peace. He used the term "The Iron Curtain" because it gave the people a very good visual of the term he was using to describe what they were doing. -
The Marshall Plan
This plan was here to support European countries and help rebuild. The United States provided 13 billion dollars to help rebuild. -
The Berlin Aircraft
The Berlin Aircraft was a measure taken by the west to keep gaining supplies from the East. The East called Blockades in 1948, but in June of 1949 they called off the blockades from the west. -
The formation of NATO
NATO was formed because they wanted to prevent Soviet Power in Europe. They also wanted to prevent the spreading of communism. -
Arms Race Begins
The Arms Race started when the Soviets gained the advantage over the United States. But the United States wanted the advantage to themselves to they kept making new revolutionary weapons. But the Soviets kept doing the same, and when they were doing this it looked like Nuclear Warfare could happen at any time. Their relationship with the Soviet Union was horrible but in 1968 they had an arm control treaty. -
Koreans in War
Before WWII Japan had control of Korea, but since the war ended the Soviet Union and the United States split Korea into North and South Korea. But this caused a problem since N. Korea wanted to make S. Korea communist. So they fought until they both agreed to an Armistice in 1953. -
The creation of the Warsaw Pact
The Soviet Union made the Warsaw pact in opposition to NATO. Also this showed the dominance they had. -
Building of the Berlin Wall
Since the Soviets wanted control of all of East Berlin they decided to build a wall across the edge of soviet territory that blocked off people from going over from one side to another. They build this wall over night and it was destroyed on November 9, 1989. -
Cuba Missile Crisis
The Cuban Missile Crisis was where the Soviet Union had given the New Communist country Cuba missiles. The United States were very worried about this so they contacted the Soviet Union and they said it was for Cuba's protection just in case of an attack from the United States. They resolved it in 1962 when the Soviet Union agreed to take out missiles in Cuba and not attack Cuba if the United States took out their missiles in Turkey. They both agreed and it was done. -
The Disassembling of the Soviet Union
This was after the fall of the Berlin Wall. This is when many other countries that were apart of the Soviet Union wanted to have freedom and have their own independent country.
