  • Yalta Conference

    Yalta Conference
    At the end of WWII, leaders of allied countries gathered at Yalta in Crimea. This was because they wanted to defeat and divide Nazi Germany. Communist governments were established in Poland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Romania, and Bulgaria. Also Stalin´s promises could not be enforced (Yalta Conference).
  • Potsdam Conference

    Potsdam Conference
    The British, US, and Germany discussed peace settlements for Europe. This was because the Germans wanted the opportunity to prepare for the eventual reconstruction of their life on a democratic and peaceful basis. They ended up making occupation zones and polish boundaries as an effect of the Potsdam conference (Potsdam Conference).
  • NATO

    NATO
    Nato was an alliance between United States, Canada, and numerous European Countries. They did that to defend the Soviet Union and its EE countries. Germany ends up joining after the Berlin Wall fell, and the leaders of Europe, NATO, and Warsaw Pact signed a major arms-control treaty.
  • Korean War

    Korean War
    North Korea attacked southward and china entered the war as the south attacked in the north which is bordered by china. This all happened because the united nations wanted to put the country back together quickly, however the soviets refused to allow people in the section to vote on a new government. This war ended up taking the lives of about 1.3 million south Koreans, 1 million Chinese, 500,000 North Koreans and 37,000 Americans, Korea also still remains split in the 21st century (Korean War).
  • Warsaw Pact

    Warsaw Pact
    The soviet and Eastern Europe created an alliance and also put troops and weapons in Eastern Europe. They did that because the wanted to create a strong defence alliance in response to NATO controlling the east. This then causes nationalism and hostility against soviet, which was forced from the soviet union (Warsaw Pact).
  • Vietnam War

    Vietnam War
    North and South Korea split in two parts and began war. This was because the North wanted to reunite the country under communism, its political and economic system and the south didn’t want that. The US fights as well because they also have communism. The Communist win because the US ends up backing off and let the south be by them self. After The war North and South Vietnam become just Vietnam (Vietnam War).
  • Suez Crisis

    Suez Crisis
    Egypt nationalized the Suez canal and the Egyptians then invade Israel and cause a crisis. This was because the us did not finance the egyptian construction like they promised. Israel lost the war but still regained shipment rights in the Straits of Tiran, but britain and France lost most of their influence in the Middle East (Suez Crisis).
  • Hungarian Revolution

    Hungarian Revolution
    The people of Hungary rebel and start an uprising because the soviet leader Nikita talks bad on Joseph and they get encouraged by his criticism and new freedom of debute. The Soviets invaded Hungary to stop the revolution and hungary ends up having a slow evolution toward some internal autonomy (Hungarian Revolution).
  • Space Race/Sputnik

    Space Race/Sputnik
    The Soviet Union and the US compete head to head to see who can produce more technology. This happens because the Soviet Union launches a satellite that the US has been trying to do first and they started to compete after that. This creates cold war tensions, lawmakers and political campaigns in the United States exploited the fear of a “missile ap” developing between the us and the soviet nuclear arsenals in the 1960 presidential election (Space Race).
  • Cuban Missile Crisis

    Cuban Missile Crisis
    Americans found missiles being assembled for installation in Cuba by the Soviets which the US found as a threat. The missiles were not even there for US, the Soviet Union used the deployment of missiles in Cuba as a way to level the playing field since they were getting taunted by Western Europe and Turkey. Eventually they end the conflict by removing the missiles so US don’t invade Cuba. Also a hotline from Washington to Moscow was put in place after the conflict (History.com Staff).
  • Perestroika

    Perestroika
    A reconstruction program was launched for the Soviet Political and Economic policy. The leader did this because he seeked to bring the Soviet Union up to economic par with capitalist countries like Germany, Japan and the United States. From This They got a new parliament that was put in place (perestroika).
  • Glasnost

    Glasnost
    The Soviet Union is going to open up to the discussion of political and social issues. They do this to overcome inertia in the Soviet political and bureaucratic apparatus. They also do this to try to include ordinary citizens in the political process (glasnost).
