Potsdam Conference
The conference that divided Germany into four zones. The capital of Germany (Berlin) would also be divided into four zones. Korea was going to be divided into Soviet Union and American zones. -
Hiroshima Destruction
The United States dropped the first atomic bomb. The bomb was dropped on Hiroshima. The second bomb was dropped on Nagasaki. -
Truman Doctrine
President Harry Truman decided to help anyone that was in communist takeover. The Truman Doctrine was the beginning of the "domino affect." This was created to stop the spread of communism. -
Marshall Plan
This was the United State's attempt to aid Western Europe. We spent nearly $13 billion dollars to help rebuild Western Europe. This took place after WWII. -
NATO
NATO stands for the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation. This was formed with Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, the UK and the US. This was formed to help protect each-other form communism takeover. -
Death of Stalin
Joseph Stalin died at the age of 74 years old. Joseph Stalin had ran the Soviet Union since 1928. He was shot for treason. -
Warsaw Pact
The Warsaw Pact was formed by East Germany, Czechoslovakia, Poland, Hungary, Romania, Albania, Bulgaria, and the Soviet Union. This was also known as the treaty of friendship. It was formed to act as a counterbalance to the NATO. -
Hungarian Revolution
The Hungarian Revolution started in Hungary in 1956. A speech was given after by Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev. Nikita Khrushchev attacked Joseph Stalin's rule. -
Space Race
The Space Race of 1957 was between the US and the USSR. On October 4, 1957, a Soviet R-2 sent Sputnik into space. The US then launched their own satellite by the year of 1958. -
The Launching of Sputnik
The Sputnik was the first artificial satellite. It was launched on October 4th, 1957. It was 58 centimeters in diameter and a metal sphere. -
U-2 Incident
Dwight D Eisenhower was the president during this time. A US U-2 plane was shot down while in soviet airspace. It crashed near Sverdlovsk. -
Berlin Wall
The wall was Eastern Germany's idea. This was was also known as the iron curtain, and it divided Europe. Over 30 miles of barbed wire was placed to dive the East from the West. -
Cuban Missile Crisis
The crisis was between the US and the USSR. This crisis had several miscalculations and it was very complicated and unique. The president during this time was John F. Kennedy. -
JFK Assassination
JFK was the 35th president of the United States. JFK was assassinated on November 22nd, 1963 at the age of 46. He was assassinated in Dallas Texas. -
End of the Soviet Union
December 25, 1991 the Soviet Union hammer and sickle flag was lowered for the very last time ever in history. The USSR began to lose its structure with the Eastern Europe causing it to fall. Gorbachev resigned as a leader on this day also.
