  • Formation of the United Nations

    The united Nations was an International organization made to help countries resolve issues through debates rather than war. Nearly every Country is in the UN. There were 5 founding nations in the UN. The creation of the UN decreased tension between the USA and USSR because it was a place for dealing with issues peacefully and both the USA and USSR had the same amount of power.
  • Creation of the State of Israel

    The state of Israel was founded for the remaining Jewish people after World War 2. They had help from the UK, USA, and other allied nations. Israel was carved out of land owned by the Palestinians. Since the Israelis pushed the Palestinians out of their homeland, conflict arose between the two groups. Israel being created increased tension between he USA and USSR due to Israel being supported by the USA, and the Palestinian looking towards the USSR for help
  • Marshall Plan

    The Marshall Plan was created by the USA to economically support countries in Europe (Mostly West Europe). In total the USA gave $13 billion dollars in aid to Europe with the United Kingdom being the biggest recipient. The Marshall Plan increased tensions between the USA and the USSR because the USA was helping Europe regain its strength, while the USSR wanted to keep Europe weak.

    Berlin Airlift

    The Berlin airlift started when the USSR set up a land blockade around West Berlin cutting off any supplies from getting into West Berlin. In order to deliver supplies British and American planes flew over West Berlin to drop supplies down to the citizens below. After a couple of months of success, the Soviets lifted the Blockade. This Increased tensions between the USA and USSR because it showed that the USSR would be punish West Berlin for not being communist.
  • Truman Doctrine

    The Truman Doctrine was created by former president Harry S. Truman. The Truman Doctrine was a foreign policy adopted by the USA to contain the spread of communism. Specifically, it was created to help prevent Turkey and Greece from falling to communism. The Truman doctrine increased tensions between the USA and USSR because it was a direct opposition to communism by the USA.
  • NATO is formed

    The North Atlantic Treaty Organization, is an alliance between democratic countries of Europe, Canada, and the USA. The point of NATO is to ensure if one member is attacked, they have the military support of the other member states. The formation of NATO increased tensions between the USA and the USSR by clearly defining the allies of the USA. By doing this it gave a warning to the USSR that if they tried to expand their control/communism to any of the member states the USA would respond.

    Korean War

    The Korean War was an event that increased tensions between the USA and USSR because they both supported opposites sides. The North was communist and was supported by the USSR and Chinese forces. The South was supported by UN forces (mostly American). The fighting went't back and forth until it stopped at almost the same exact spot it started. this further ruined relations between the USA and USSR because it put pressure on the two to promote and contain the other type of government
  • Creation of the Warsaw Pact

    The Warsaw Pact is the communist counter part to NATO. The Warsaw Pact is a pact between East European, communist countries. The pact promises that if one member is attacked, then the others will militarily support them. The USSR was the most powerful nation part of the pact. The Warsaw Pact increased tension between the USA and USSR because it created a further divide by forming two groups. If one member from each group attacked one another, it would lead to practically World War 3.

    Vietnam War

    This event is important because it was a fight for the control of Vietnam. The two sides were a north communist government, who were aided by the communist Viet Cong, against the southern democratic government. It is especially important because the communist north won the war even though the South was backed by the USA. This created a bad image for the US military and government.
  • Berlin Wall is Built

    A wall was built around East Berlin by the communist to stop East Germans from migrating to West Berlin. Travel between East Berlin and West Berlin stopped. Building the wall increased tensions between the USA and USSR because it further divided communist and Democratic ideologies.

    Cuban Missile Crisis

    The Cuban Missile Crisis started when the USA discovered missiles sites on Cuba. The USA thought that Cuba obtained nuclear missiles from the Soviet Union. The USA demanded that the USSR remove any missiles from Cuba, in fear of the missiles being used due to the proximity of Cuba to the USA. In the end, however, the Cuban Missile decreased tension between the USSR and USA because to prevent anything like this from happening again the set up a direct communication line between the USSR and USA
  • Camp David Accords

    The Camp David Accords were peace talks between the State of Israel and Egypt over their conflict. The peace talks were held in the United states and mediated by former President Jimmy Carter. The Camp David Accords had a minuet affect on the tensions between the USSR and the USA, as it did not directly involve the two superpowers.
  • Implementation of Perestrokia and Glasnost

    Perestroika and Glasnost were policies created by the USSR. Their main goal was to open up the USSR to the global market. This decreased tension between the USA and USSR because it made communication and trade between the USA and USSR easier. This registered their realationhip
  • Fall of the Berlin Wall

    The fall of the Berlin Wall signified the beginning of the end to communism. People on both sides of the wall realized that the wall wasn't doing any good. It was only dividing families, friends, and fellow Germans. People began using small tools to chip pieces off pieces of the wall. Then the deconstruction of the wall began. The made relations between the USA and USSR better because it showed a time of the destruction of the divide between communism and democracy.

    The Soviet Union started to dissolve when member states starting to leave. The Leader of the USSR stepped down and handed power the the Russian Federation President. The Soviet Union dissolving caused all tensions between the USSR and USA to cease to exist. However, in the future there would be a lesser version of the tensions between the USA and the USSR's predecessor
