United Nations Formed
The United Nations is an organization that was created after the second world war, it was committed to maintaining international peace and security. And to improve human rights as well as living standards. -
Truman Doctrine
President Truman asked for $400 million to help aid Greece and Turkey both militarily and economically. This was to try and prevent the Soviet Union from gaining control of both countries. -
Hollywood 10
The Hollywood Ten was a group of 10 film industry members that refused to testify to an anti-communist committee hearing during the Second Red Scare era. The Second Red Scare was a time period marked by the fear of a communism takeover during the initial phases of the Cold War Era.Mar 9, 2022 -
Marshall Plan
President Truman signed the Economic Recovery Act of 1948, which would later be named the Marshall Plan, after Secretary of State George Marshall, who originally proposed the plan. Its purpose was to provide economic support to help restore economic infrastructure in postwar Europe. -
NATO Formed
NATO was formed to keep peace in Europe as tensions were rising between the U.S. and the Soviet Union. It was an alliance to preserve freedom. -
Korean War
The Korean War was fought between North Korea and South Korea from 1950 to 1953. The war began on 25 June 1950 when North Korea invaded South Korea following clashes along the border and rebellions in South Korea. -
Space Race Begins
The Space Race was a 20th-century competition between two Cold War rivals, the United States and the Soviet Union, to achieve superior spaceflight capability. It had its origins in the ballistic missile-based nuclear arms race between the two nations following World War II. The USSR would launch Sputnik into space. It was the first artificial satellite to orbit the earth. -
Bay of Pigs
The Bay of Pigs Invasion was a failed military landing operation on the southwestern coast of Cuba in 1961 by Cuban exiles, covertly financed and directed by the United States. It was aimed at overthrowing Fidel Castro's communist government. -
Berlin Wall Goes Up
The Berlin Wall was constructed to prevent people from escaping the soviet-controlled east berlin to west berlin. -
U.S. Enters Vietnam War (Officially)
The Vietnam War was a conflict between North and South Vietnam, with the north wanting to unite the two countries with communism. The U.S. would support South Vietnam with its "containment" ideology, and the Soviet Union would support North Vietnam, as they supported the spread of communism. Eventually, the U.S. would pull out of the war and North Vietnam would forcefully unite South Vietnam on April 30, 1975. -
Soviets Invade Afghanistan
The Soviets invaded Afghanistan to try and help support the communist government there. Many of the citizens didn't support the communist government and war broke out. -
Berlin Wall Goes Down
Political reforms that were happening in Eastern Germany (the east side of the wall), as well as the increasing pressure from the citizens, would lead to the fall of the Berlin Wall.
