Soviets invade Afghanistan
The Soviet Union sent thousand of troops into Afghanistan and assumed complete military and political control over them. This led to the US boycotting the 1980 olympics. -

This was when east and west Germany reunited together. East Germany was no longer communist and this was evidence that the war saw pact's days as numbered.
