  • potsdam conference 1

    Leaders discussed peace settlements for Europe. Ultimatum towards japan, surrender or heavier air attacks, japan rejected the ultimatum so US dropped an atomic bomb.
  • warsaw pact

    signed a treaty, then built military strength to attack. Anti-soviet independence movements gained strength
  • korean war

    north and south korea fought over communism. China became allies with north korea. Then soviet union took over and US took over the south. Neither side gained or lost much, peace talks occurred and they signed an agreement.
  • Vietnam War

    Vietnam was split in two, north and south. North Vietnam wanted communism, but south Vietnam fought against that. North wanted rights for political and economic system. The US ended up helping South Vietnam. North Vietnam won the war.
  • Suez Crisis

    Gamal Nasser nationalized Suez Canal. America and Britain did not want to fiance Egypt's construction. They wanted to control of the canal and to depose Nasser. Nasser emerged from the Suez crisis as a hero and victor.
  • Hungarian Revolution

    In 1956 a popular uprising came about. A speech was given by a Soviet leader, Nikita Khrushchev, who attacked Joseph Stalin’s rule. They broke out into an active fight, encouraging new freedom of debate and criticism. They declared Hungarian neutrality and appealed to US for support. The Soviet Union invaded Hungary to stop freedom. The rebels won the first phase, then Imre Nagy became premier. Hungary then experienced a slow evolution toward internal autonomy.

  • Perestroika

    A new parliament was created, Congress of people's deputies. They wanted to bring Soviet Union up to economic par with capitalist like Germany, Japan, and US. They thought this program moderate and controlled reform, would revitalized Soviet economy.
  • Glasnost

    A policy was instituted, open discussion of political and social issues. They wanted to democratize it, overcome inerita, who wanted to remain status quo. They ended up enlarging individual freedom and fundamental changes to the political structure occurred.
