U.S. drops an atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan. Wiping out hundreds of people on the spot. Later kills thousands from radiation poisening. -
The Marshall Plan
President Truman signed the Economic Recovery Act. It became the Marshall Plan, named for Secretary of State George Marshall, who in 1947 proposed that the United States provide economic assistance to restore the economic infrastructure of postwar Europe. -
The Berlin Airlift
The Berlin Airlift begins due to the Soviet actions of building the Berlin wall. The wall was supposed to cut off all importing places to Berlin, but the Soviets failed and the Berlin Airlift was a success. Ended in May of 1949 -
The Nuclear Arms Race
The Nuclear Arms Race begins between the United States and the Soviet Union. A treaty is formed betweent the two called The Test Ban Treaty which made nuclear testing in the atmosphere, outerspace, and underwater outlawed. -

The Warsaw Pact was signed by eight communist states of Central and Eastern Europe in existance during the Cold War. This acted as an alliance with these states in response to the NATO's formation. -
The Re-opening
The Suez Canal was re-opened after it had been shut down from the Suez Crisis. It was so littered with wreckage that it took weeks for the Egyptian and United Nations workers to clean it up. -
Vietnamese invade Cambodia
Vietnamese forces invade Cambodia. Pol regime overthrown and replaced by pro-Vietnamese communist regime led by Heng Samrin. -
