The Truman Doctrine
The Truman Doctrine was a pledge to provide economic and military aid to oppose spread of communism. In the mid-1947, the U.S. government launched a program of economic aid called "The Marshall Plan". -

The United States and The Soviet Union entered and era of tension and hostility. It was a struggle for power and control between two nations with very different forms of government, economic systems, and ways of life. -
Crisis in Berlin
In June 1948, the Soviets blocked off all land, rail, and water routes into West Berlin. The Soviets hoped that these measures would force the West to leave Berlin. Western leaders organized the Berlin airlift, a massive effort to supply west Berlin by air. -
NATO
The U.S., Canada, and most Western European countries joined together in a military alliance. The alliance called the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, or NATO, was designed to counter Soviet power in Europe. -
War in Korea
In June 1950, the North Koreans attacked South Korea. Their goal was to unite the country under a Communist government. -

Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union
Khrushchev eventually became the leader of the Soviet Union. There were revolts in Eastern Europe, the Soviet economy wasn't growing and revolutions spread. East Germany and West Germany were later on reunified as a single nation. -
The Warsaw Pact
In 1955, the Soviet Union and Communist nations of Eastern Europe formed their own alliance known as the Warsaw Pact. -
North America
The economy in North America was growing. There were also new laws and orders that ended segregation and renewed women's rights. -
End of WW2
When the war in Europe ended in May 1945, much of Germany was in ruins and it had no functioning government. -
