  • Potsdam Conference

    Potsdam Conference
    On july 17 1945 the Potsdam Conference started the people who attended this conference were the allies and their main goal was to discuss peace settlements for Europe and new borders. After Germany's and poland's new borders were established millions of germans were moved from poland back to germany. While at the potsdam conference “President Truman told Stalin about the “new weapon” (the atomic bomb) that the United States intended to use against Japan.
  • The Berlin Airlift

    The Berlin Airlift
    The berlin airlift was caused during the berlin war when russia had communist control of part of berlin and they put a land blockade in germany so the allies couldn't deliver goods to the western troops. This caused “rising tensions between western and eastern powers”
  • NATO

    NATO
    NATO was started in 1941 with the intentions of defending and spreading democratic influences as well as the countries involved in democracies. The reason NATO was started was because the U.S felt threatened by the spread of communism and was worried that russia would try to spread communism all over the world. The heart of the treaty was that “an armed attack against one or more of them in Europe or North America shall be considered an attack against them all” (NATO).

    On October 1, 1949 the chinese revolution started when the soviet union was expanding communism and moved on to china. The people of china did not want to instal communism but “as the civil war gained strength from 1947 to 1949, eventual Communist victory seemed more and more likely. Although the Communists did not hold any major cities after World War II, they had strong grassroots support.
  • Korean War

    The korean war was started on June 25, 1950 and was started when the U.N tried to allow the people to vote for either a democratic government or communistic government, russia refused to let the people vote and spilt korea apart, north being communistic and south being democratic “On June 25, 1950, the North Koreans, supported by the Soviets, attacked southward across the 38th parallel. This began the Korean War”
  • Warsaw Pact

    Warsaw Pact
    The warsaw pact was started on may 14, 1955 and dissolved on july 1, 1991. “What the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) is for the Western democracies, the Warsaw Pact was for the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe”(Warsaw pact). The warsaw pact was started in order to defend and spread communistic influences, the countries involved in the pact were part of eastern europe and the U.S.S.R. while the pact was active it spread communistic influences to eastern germany and other parts of europe.
  • Vietnam War

    The vietnam war started on July 26, 1956 because france wanted to retake the territory from japan after world war II but russia got involved and separated the country. Before the war broke out the russians and french would try to spread their economic policies to the country eventually the country would descend into civil war and split in half “after the country of Vietnam was split into two parts, North Vietnam and South Vietnam. North Vietnam wanted to reunite the country under Communism.
  • The Suez Crisis

    The Suez Crisis
    On july 26 1956 egypt seized the suez canal from the western allies and started the suez crisis. The suez crisis was started “by an American and British decision not to finance Egypt’s construction of the Aswan High Dam, as they had promised, in response to Egypt’s growing ties with communist Czechoslovakia and the Soviet Union. Nasser reacted to the American and British decision by declaring martial law in the canal zone and seizing control of the Suez Canal Company”

    The Space race was a race that started on october 4, 1957 and the point of the race was to see which country was the most technologically advanced. The main thing that triggered the space race was the successful launch of the sputnik satellite “the fact that the soviet were successful fed fears that the U.S. military had generally fallen behind in developing new technology”
  • The Berlin Wall

    The Berlin Wall
    The berlin wall was constructed on november 10 of 1958 because russia had made part of berlin communist while the western allies were making all of germany democratic causing the separation of berlin and the building of the wall. Even though the rest of “West Berlin remained under western control, but it was located deep inside East German territory, and that made its protection from communist takeover a constant challenge for the western powers”
  • Cuban Missile Crisis

    Cuban Missile Crisis
    The cuban missile crisis started on october 14, 1962 and lasted 14 days, it was caused because the U.S.S.R had taken over cuba and was going to place ballistic missiles on the island. “From the outset of the crisis, Kennedy and ExCom determined that the presence of Soviet missiles in Cuba was unacceptable”
  • Glasnost

    Glasnost
    Glasnost was launched after perestroika in russia and the goal of this was to give the people of russia more freedom much like a democracy. The reason for Glasnost was because Mikhail Gorbachev “believed that the opening up of the political system—essentially, democratizing it—was the only way to overcome inertia in the Soviet political and bureaucratic apparatus, which had a big interest in maintaining the status quo”
