    This day in History, the formal surrender of the Nazi party was accepted by the allies. In addition, Germany surrendered to the Red Army in Berlin

    Russia Declares War on Japan
    This day in history, Russia decided to invade Japan. The surrender of the Japanese the following month, World War II came to a close.
  • Marshall Plan

    Marshall Plan
    The Marshall plan was an American initiative to aid Western Europe rebuild its economy. Western Europe in turn helped the United States fight Communism and the Soviet Union.
  • Berlin Blockade

    Berlin Blockade
    The Soviet Union blocked all road, railway and canal access to West Berlin. The United States was able to airlift goods into West Berlin and rendered the Soviet's tactics useless.
  • Korean War

    Korean War
    Stalin supported the invasion of South Korea by North Korea. The United States in turn supported South Korea which lead to further conflict between the United States and the Soviet Union.
  • U-2 Spy Plane

    U-2 Spy Plane
    The CIA had a plane practicing Aerial Reconnaissance in order to track the Soviet Union's moves. However, the plane was discovered by the Soviet Military and wsa shot down by a missile. This was extremely embarassing for the United States.

    The Bay of Pigs was an unsuccesfull action of a CIA trained group of Cuban exiles to invade Southern Cuba and overthrow Cuban revolutionary Fidel Castro. The United States failed misserably and was laughed at by the rest of the world.

    Cuban Missile Crisis

    After the failed Bay of Pigs attempt, The Soviet Union convinced Fidel Castro to place Soviet Nuclear Missiles in Cuba as a way to deter future invasion attempts. The United States countered this move with the Naval quarantine of Cuba.

    Soviets invade Afghanistan
    The Soviet Union and United States each backed opposite sides in this war. Suprisingly, this war lead to the US boycott of the 190 Olympics.
  • Germany Reunited

    Germany Reunited
    This day in history, East and West Berlin reunited to recreate Germany. This marked the end of the Warsaw Pact.
