Chinese Civil War
The Chinese civil war was between the ruling party Kuomintang and the communist party of China. The communist party of China won and the ruling party Kuomintang went to Taiwan. This represents the GASPIRE+ theme of religion because this war was fought over religion. This allowed the US to become better allies with China when they were weak after the war. -
Truman Doctrine
President Truman gives Greece and Turkey $400 million from congress. Truman does this to prevent Greece and Turkey from falling under communist forces. This connects to Economy because Truman is giving Greece and Turkey money so they can boost their economy and not be forced into communism. This made it so Russian would try to counteract this next time and aided communist countries. -
Marshall Plan
The US Sec. of State George Marshall gave Europe $13 billion to help them with an economic recovery. This helped Europe tremendously and allowed Europe to have an economic recovery. This connects to Economy because George Marshall gave Europe $13 billion to help improve their economy. This was another win for the US because it helped some European countries not turn to communism.("Marshall Plan") -
Berlin Blockade
The Soviet Union cut off all land and sea access to Berlin making it very hard for people to get in to Berlin to deliver supplies. The only access to Berlin at the time was through plane, many people living in Berlin starved at that time. This represents the GASPIRE+ theme of geography because the Soviet Union cut off almost all ways of getting into Berlin. This will go on to effect the war rising tensions between NATO and the Soviet Union. -
North Atlantic Treaty Orginization
The NATO was an alliance formed between: Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The countries agreed that if one country were to be attacked it would be seen as an attack to them all and they would protect each other. This is social because it is all of these countries creating an alliance with each other. This will cause the USSR to create their own alliances. (Haglund). -
Korean War
The Korea war started between the Democratic People's Republic of North Korea and the Republic of South Korea. The Soviet Union and the People's Republic of China supplied North Korea and the United Nations with the help of the US supplied South Korea. This relates to the GASPIRE+ theme of political because a war is breaking out and tensions between countries are high. This created a demilitarized zone that is still here today and more separations between countries occurred. (Millett) -
Warsaw Pact
the Warsaw Pact was an alliance between: the Soviet Union, Albania, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, East Germany, Hungary, Poland, and Romania. This was a mutual-defense organization. This relates to the GASPIRE+ theme of social because this is an alliance. This will impact the Cold War because there are now two big alliances on opposite sides. (Warsaw Pact). -
First Man in Space
The Soviet Union won the first part of the space race getting the first man into space. Yuri Gagarin was the first man to enter space, this was a big deal because it was one more thing that the US and Soviet Union were competing for and the Soviet Union won the first part of it. This represents the GASPIRE+ theme of Innovation because the Soviet Union were able to send a man into space. This effects the war because the Soviet Union were able to beat the US in something else which raises tension -
"Environment Transformers"
The "Environment Transformers" were hat things that these three people came up with. The idea behind it was that the government does not care about art at this point in time so why not create something really crazy and weird. This represents the GASPIRE+ theme of Artistic because it is these three men expressing their art in their hats. This did not really effect the outcome of the Cold War. (Ward). -
1st Man on the Moon
The space race was going on and the Soviet Union successfully got the first man into space but the US got the first man on the moon. The space race was another way for the US and the Soviet Union to compete. This represents the GASPIRE+ theme of Innovation because the US created new technologies that allowed the first man to walk on the moon. This would go on to effect the cold war because the US won another race against the Soviet Union and tensions would grow. -
The Olympics
In the summer Olympics of 1972 the Soviet Union beat the US in basketball 51-50, the US had not been beaten since 1934. The US also beat the Soviet Union in Hockey 4-3. This represents the GASPIRE+ theme of Culture because the Olympics are very cultural, athletes from each country come to compete and represent their country. This is another way for the two most powerful countries are the time: the US and the Soviet Union to compete against each other to fight for the best. -
Strategic Arms Limitation Talks
This was a talk between the Soviet Union and the United States about limiting their use of nuclear weapons. The United States does not agree to this due to the war in Afghanistan in the last year. This represents the GASPIRE+ theme of Political because it is the US president and the leader of the Soviet Union talking about military related things. This goes on and helps the war start to die down because there is talks of limiting military's. -
The Collapse of the Berlin Wall
The Berlin wall was created to keep Western Fascists from entering East Berlin. The head of the East German Communist Party announced that citizens could freely cross the wall, citizens went to the wall with hammers and chisels and began destroying the wall. This represents the theme of psychological because the collapse of the Berlin Wall was a symbol of the end of Communism in Germany. This will go on to effect the Cold War because it is the start to the end of the Soviet Union. ("Berlin Wall) -
Russa Takes Crimean Peninsula
The Russian Federation took back the Crimean Peninsula, they started by breaking through the gates and demanding that the Ukrainian soldiers surrender. The Russian Federation successfully took over all of the Crimean Peninsula and Ukrainian solders were forced to their homes to pack and leave. This represents the GASPIRE+ theme of Geography because Russia took land from Ukraine. This connects to the cold war because the Crimean Peninsula was taken from the Soviet Union during the cold war. -
Interview
The Cold War is different because the was has not really ended. There are still threats of bombs and now many countries have bombs that could potentially reach the US and its just always going to be over our heads. (Debbie Jae)
