    Berlin Airlift

    The Soviets forced a blockade of rail, road, and water access to allied controlled areas in Berlin. The US and UK responded by airlifting food and goods to Berlin. This ended when the Soviets lifted the blockade on land access to Western Berlin.
  • Creation of NATO

    Started with the signing of the Washington treaty, to secure peace in Europe and promote cooperation of the members to guard their freedom.

    Korean War

    This was due to North Korea invading South Korea due to clashes along the border and rebellions in South Korea.
  • Creation of Warsaw Pact

    Known as the treaty of friendship, created immediately after the accession to west Germany and the alliance. This supplemented existing agreements.

    Vietnam War

    It was the second of the Indochina wars and was between North Vietnam and South Vietnam. This was due to the communist government being pitted against its allies.
  • Sputnik

    The USSR launched a lead in the space race with Sputnik, a basketball-sized object that became the first manmade object to orbit the earth. First artificial satellite.
  • Construction of the Berlin Wall

    The wall completely cut off West Berlin from surrounding Eastern Germany. This construction was demanded by The German Democratic Republics.
  • Cuban Missile Crisis

    A missile scare confrontation between the United States and the Soviet Union. Became an international crisis when missiles were also dropped in Italy and Turkey, this was the closest the cold war got to be a world war.
  • Moon Landing

    The United States Apollo 11 was the first crewed mission to land on the moon.
  • Destruction of Berlin Wall

    During a peaceful revolution, the wall was destructed, bringing down the Iron curtain. This started the fall of communism in eastern and Central Europe.
