Truman Doctriine

Marshall Plan

The Berlin airlift was a massive effort to supply West Berlin by air. The Berlin airlift caused the Soviets to call off the blockade of Berlin in May 1949. -
NATO
The US, Canada, and most Western European countries joined together in an alliance. This aliance was called the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. -
Warsaw Pact

Takeover of the Suez Canal
Egypt angered the west by taking over the Suez Canal which was controlled by Great Britain and France. After Britain, France, and Israel attack Egypt, the Soviet Union said they would fight on Egypt's side. -
Bay of Pigs Invasion
The US govt. hoped to overthrow Fidel Castro, and trained 1,500 Cubans who had fled from Castro. This force came ashore to Cuba's Bay of Pigs. Inavders were quickly defeated. -
SALT I and II
Richard Nixon began the Strategic Arms Limitations Tals which discussed the number of nuclear weapons held by each side. This led to the ABM treaty (anti ballistic missiles) and the 2 SALT talks resulted in an arms control treaty, but it was never ratified by the senate. -

The US and Soviet Union ratified the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty, which called for thr elimination of certain missiles. -
