After WW2 the Russians wanted Berlin all for them selves so they closed all railroads, highways, and canals leading there so took al of the good so it might drive Britain, France, and the U.S. out, but instread the U.S. decided to get goods to Berlin by Air this is where the name comes from. It lasted more than a year with more than 2.3 million tons of cargo taken to West Berlin -

This is a military alliance, which provided for a collective self-defence against Solviet aggression, greatly increased American influenced in Europe. -
Warsaw Pact
The Solviet Union and seven of it's Europe satellites signed a treaty established the Warsaw Pact, a mutual organization that put the Solviets in command of the armed forces of the member state. this called on states to come to the defense of any member attacked by the outside force.
