    Cuban exiles began an invasion on the southern shore of the island. The exiles surrendered after less than a day of fighting.

    After sealing off free passage the Germans begin building the Berlin Wall to permanently close off access. For the next 28 years, the Berlin Wall stood as the biggest symbol of the Cold War.
