The Truman Doctrine states that the United States would provide assistance to Democratic nations that are under threat of forces whether it is an external or internal threat that was occurring. The assistance that was said to be provided was political assistance, military assistance, and economic assistance. President Truman addressed the Truman Doctrine on March 12, 1947, it was not approved until April 22, 1947. -
The Marshall Plan is Introduced
The Marshall Plan was Introduced on April 3, 1948. The Marshall Plan's purpose was to help with the economic recovery of the nations after World War II. In addition to that goal of the Marshall Plan, the other goal was to attempt to prevent the spread of communism in Western Europe. The Marshall Plan was first known as the Recovery Act of 1948, it then became The Marshall plan with George Marshall's plan to provide assistance and restore the economy. -
The Berlin Airlift
The Berlin Airlift was the crisis that occurred on June 24, 1948. The Soviet forces blockaded specific access to Allied controlled areas of Berlin. The access that was blockaded was railroads and water access. The United States with the help of The United Kingdom they were able to Airlift food and fuel to Berlin from Allied airbases in western Germany. The American aircrews made more than 189,000 flights. -
The Formation of NATO
The Formation of NATO also known as The North Atlantic Treaty Organization was created by many nations including: The United States, Canada, and several Western European Nations. The purpose was to provide security with the help of many nations against the Soviet Union. NATO was the very first peacetime military alliance that the United States entered. -
Start of the Korean War
The Korean War Started June 25, 1950. It began when the Northern Korean Army invaded South Korea in a general attack at different strategic points along the 38th parallel, which is the line dividing communist North Korea from the non-communist Republic. The victory of this ended with no clear victory. -
End of the Korean War
The Korean War ended 7 months after President Eisenhower's inauguration. An armistice was signed which ended the organized combat operation and plans. The signing of the armistice left the Korean Peninsula divided. The Korean War ended on July 27, 1953. -
Formation of the Warsaw Pact
The Formation of the Warsaw Pact was created on May 14, 1955. In a way it was a response to the creation of NATO. It was directed to the rearming of West Germany. It was to prevent Central and Eastern Europe being used as a base for its enemies. -
The Eisenhower Doctrine is established
The Eisenhower Doctrine was established January 5, 1957. The goal was to contain the spread of communism. It was to promise military or economic aid to any Middle Eastern country needing help in resisting communist aggression. -
Sputnik launched into orbit
Sputnik launched into orbit on October 4, 1957. It was announced by the Soviet Union that they had placed a satellite to orbit around the Earth. -
The U-2 incident
The U-2 incident was when an American spy plane piloted by Francis Gary Powers was shot down. The plane was shot down over Soviet air space. The powers pleaded guilty and were convicted. The incident took place on May 1, 1960.
