Defeat of Germany and creation of Soviet-controlled Governmants
After the Allies defeated Germany in June 1945, Stalin created his Soviet-controlled governments in Eastern Europe. This included his Red Army occupied into these countries. The United States oblected to this totalitarianism. -
The U.S. tests its first atomic bomb
In 1945 the United States successfully tested the world's first atomic bomb in Alamogordo, New Mexico. Later that year the Atomic Bomb was dropped in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, killing thousands of people and ending the war with Japan. -
Potsdam Conference
After the conference in Yalta the United States, Germany, and the Soviet Union agreed to reconize each others' influence over their respecrtive troops remained at the end of the war. -
Germany is divided
Afte the war ended Germany was split into zones and placed under militairy probation. The Soviets were in the East and the U.S. was in the South. The British took the Northwest. Berlin was also split and goven to equally after the war. -
Iron Cutain Speech
In the United States of 1946 Winstin Chirchill gave out his famous Iron Curtain Speech. Churchill explained all the countries that were from Soviet controll and he named all of them the Iron Curtain. -
Marshall Plan
The Marshall Plan provided 17 billion dollars in aid for the economic recovery of Europe. The United States promoted this plan as an effort for world peace. In exchange, European countries had to buy American goods. -
Truman Doctrine
After countries like Greece and Turkey were being under attack by communist troops, the United States decided to step in and fund those small countries who were fighting communism. Truman gave a speech as to why he wanted to help these countries, this speecj was the Truman doctine. -
NSC 68
In 1947 President truman National Security council drafted NSC 68, which was a blueprint for American policy during the Cold War. This resulted in the increase in military spending in the United States. -
Turkey fights Communism
After the Soviet Union took over many small countries some countries like Turkey and Greece wanted to fight back. The british aided these countries but soon after they could no longer afford it. The U.S. stepped in and aided these countries. -
New German Currency
In 1948 the U.S. and other countries announced plans to indroduce a new form of currency in Germany. After the Soviets formally withdrew from the Allied Control Council. -
Blockade of West Berlin
After the United States intrduced the new currency to West Berlin, the Soviets protested and instituted a formal blackade of Berlin. Stalin cut off all road, rail, and water routes to West Berlin. -
U.S. begins airlifting goods
After West Berlin was blockaded by Stalin, the U.S. started to send goods over by airlifting goods to West Berlin in an attept to save the desparate country from starvation -
U.S. joins NATO
The United States joined western nations such as Canada, France, Great Britain, Italy, and the Netherlands to form the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). They created this to protect from Soviet alliance. -
United States no longer has monopoly of nucluer wepaons
The United States had a nucleur monopoly up until 1949 when the Soviets came up with their own nucluer weapon. The technology was no longer new and the Soviet Union was catching up. -
Stalin reopens routes
After a full year of no water transport or food, Stalin reopended the routes to West Berlin but Berlin still remained a split city and later Stalin built a wall. -
China turns Communist
Mao Zedong successfully led a communist revolution in China. After the Soviets heard the news, they instantly signed a finacial aid agreeement that would aid China in anyway to suppoert Communism. -
Korean War
The Korean War spread alram throughtout the United States in a fear of Communism. After World War 2 thr Korean country was split into two parts: the communist north side and the South side that was supported by the U.S. -
North Korea invades
With the help of the Soviet Union the North Koreans tried to invade South Korea.Shortly after the U.S. was athourized to sent troops to Korea and help the South Koreans. China was then getting involved to the wat. -
Hydrogen Bomb
The United States was again ahead in nucleur warfare because of the hydrogen bomb which was very new at the time. The world's first ever hydrogen bomb was made and tested by the U.S. and was new technology to the world. -
Soviets make their own hydrogen bomb
After the success of the U.S. hydrogen bomb the Soviets looked yet again to catch up. The Soviet Union came up with their own hydrogen bomb in an effort to be ahead of the United States. -
Korean war ends
After many issues happening in Korea the U.S. started to fight against North Korean but it all ended when Soviets said they were going to enter the war. MacArthur was afraid of a third World War heppening. -

After NATO was created the soviets also formed a military alliance with other Eastern European countries like Czechoslovakia, East Germany, Hungry, Poland, and Romaania.l This was known as the Warsaw Treaty Organization. -

After many wars in the past decade the people of czechoslovakia decided that the form of gevernmant was too demanding ab=nf that they neede more freedom.They rebellded and the Soviets stopped them.
