    Establishment of the Truman Doctrine
    President Truman asked for $400 million towards military and economic aid for Greece and Turkey to prevent them falling under communist rule.
  • Formation of the UN

    Formation of the UN
    Created to establish peace after the losses of war, China, France, the U.K, U.S. and Russia as well as other signoities came together to form a council and maintain international balance.
  • Formation of NATO

    Formation of NATO
    Created to provide collective security against the Soviet Union, maintain peace and prevent Soviet militarism / nationalism in the future. Each member agrees to provide aid in the form of money or military if needed.
  • Korean War

    Korean War
    Fought between North and South Korea, the U.S. entered on South Korea's side as a 'principal participant', meaning North Korea invaded with a much larger military and allies, meaning the South required aid. No winner resulted from the Korean war and the country remains divided.

    Berlin Wall goes up
    The wall, designed surrounding the West side of Berlin, was designed to prevent people from escaping to the East. The wall stretches over 30 miles and was lined with barbed wire, with little points of entry (or exit) for Westerners.
  • Soviets invade Afghanistan

    Soviets invade Afghanistan
    Following a 10 year conflict, the soviets sent over 30,000 troops to overthrow the Afghan government. They ultimately failed in this task and eventually Afghanistan won the Soviet Afghan War. The ultimate consequences were the uprising of violent groups like the Taliban, eventual fall of the Soviet Union and poor living conditions for Afghan citizens.
