    V-E Day
    After nearly six years of fighting Germany surrendered on May 7th 1945. The next day was proclaimed V-E Day, Victory in Europe Day. WWII in Euriope was over.

    Soon after WWII ended in 1945 the Cold War started in 1947. It lasted for over 40 years.
  • V-J Day

    V-J Day
    Japan finally surrendered on this day after the U.S bombed two of Japans cities killing about 145,000 people on each the days of the bombings. More people died from radiation poisoning. August 15 1945 the war was finally over.
  • Truman Doctrine was created

    Truman Doctrine was created
    President Truman pledged to provide economic and military aid to countrys to oppose the spread of communism. The Soviets were threatening Greece and Turkey and the U.S helped.
  • Berlin Airlift

    Berlin Airlift
    Soviets blocked off all land, rail, and water routes into West Berlin. They could not get food and other supplies they needed. The west did a huge effort to help them with what they needed via air. This lasted until May 11th, 1949.
  • NATO was created

    NATO was created
    Countries in fear of the spread of communism formed NATO, a military aliance. They countered Soviet power in Europe.
  • Warsaw Pact was created

    Warsaw Pact was created
    Soviet Union and other communist countries in Europe formed an aliance in react of NATO. They named it the Warsaw pact.
  • Sputnik

    Sputnik
    The Soviet Union launches Sputnik. It was historys first artificial satelite. Americans were scared and in response made NASA.
  • Cuban Missile Crisis

    Cuban Missile Crisis
    This was a confrontation between the U.S and Soviet Union over the installation of Soviet nuclear missiles in Cuba. It lasted two weeks and they agreed to remove missiles in Cuba if the U.S removed theirs from Turkey.
  • SALT I

    SALT I
    SALT I led to the agreements limiting the number of nuclear weapons held by each side. It also led to the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty, it prevented the development of weapons designed to shoot down nuclear missiles.
  • SALT II

    SALT II
    SALT II resulted in an arms control treaty. It was nver ratified by the U.S Senate though.
  • Fall of the Berlin Wall

    Fall of the Berlin Wall
    The Fall of the Berlin Wall was a symbol of repression in the Soviet Union and of the Cold War. Each side now got to cross over after decades of being trapped. It was a very proud day.
  • Collapse of Soviet Union, Cold War is over

    Collapse of Soviet Union, Cold War is over
    After the fall of the Berlin Wall the Soviet Union was falling apart. There was 15 separate republics and many of them wanted their independence. On this day the mighty Soviet Union was no more.
