  • United Nations Formed

    Created in an attempt to maintain international peace and security. Its forerunner was the League of Nations.
  • Truman Doctrine

    President Truman asked for military and economic assistance from Greece and Turkey. He feared these countries would fall to communism.
  • Hollywood 10

    A scandal where 10 motion picture producers, directors, and screenwriters were accused of being communists and having communist connections. They all refused to testify and spent a year in jail.
  • Marshall Plan

    Signed by President Truman, the Marshall Plan proposed that the U.S. provide economic assistance to restore the economic infrastructure of Europe after WW2.
  • NATO Formed

    Created by the U.S., Canada, and several other nations. Formed to provide collective security against the Soviet Union.
  • Korean War

    A war between North and South Korea along the 38th Parallel. Tensions between communist North Korea and non-communist South Korea had been brewing over the previous 5 years.
  • Space Race/Sputnik

    It lasted from the late 50s to the mid-70s. A competition between the U.S.S.R and the U.S.A. over who could "conquer" outer space first. The U.S.A. won.
  • Berlin Wall Goes Up

    A barbed wire wall put up bu communist leader Nikita Khrushchev between East and West Berlin, to prevent those living in East Berlin from escaping communist rule.
  • Bay of Pigs

    The U.S. invaded Cuba at the Bay of Pigs in opposition of Cuban dictator Fidel Castro. It had poor planning and execution and ultimately failed.
  • U.S. Officially Enters Vietnam War

    The U.S. entered the Vietnam War after North Vietnamese torpedo boats allegedly attacked the U.S.S. Maddox and U.S.S. Turner. The U.S. also entered to try and prevent a communist takeover of the region.
  • Soviets Invade Afghanistan

    The Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan due to multiple uprisings against communism happening in Afghanistan during the previous years.
  • Berlin Wall Comes Down

    The Berlin Wall was finally taken down as the first step towards German reunification. The East German government was facing pressure to loosen some of its regulations regarding travel to West Germany.
