    Who: USSR Where: Soviet Union What: At the begginnning of 1943, the Soviet Union started experimenting with atomic bombs. The first ever test was done in 1949. How was liberalism affected: It was increased in the Soviet Union because the weapons were created for national security. For other countries, liberalism decreased because now they have to worry about attacks.
  • Yalta Conference

    Yalta Conference
    Who: Franklin D. Roosevelt (US), Winston Churchill (British), and Joseph Stalin. Where: A city called Yalta, which is located along the Crimean Peninsula. What: The Yalta conference was a meeting with a purpose to decide what to do with Germany once they have been defeated. It divided Germany into 4 sections and created free elections. How it affected liberalism: The creation of free election where everyone had a say in the government increased liberalism in this area greatly.
  • Hiroshima Bombing

    Who: US, Japan Where: Hiroshima, Japan What: The United States dropped an atomic bomb over a city in Japan called Hiroshima. Thousands of civilians died as the city was flattened. This event lead to the end of WW2. How it affected liberalism: This event was good for liberalism because it shows that the US was a sleeping giant before Japan woke it up. This event helped lead to the end of WW2 which in turn created liberalism.

    Where: Potsdam, Germany Who: USSR, USA, and the UK What: The three nations decided to divide Germany into 3 seperate parts. One for the USSR, one for the USA, and one for the UK. There were also plans to dissarm Germany. Tensions also started to grow between the USA and the USSR. How did it affect liberalism: This created less liberalism due to the fact that Germany was being disarmed. The tensions that were created also made it so people had less freedoms of what they could do.

    Who: US, Nagasaki, Japan Where: Nagasaki, Japan What: The second bombing of Japan occured in Nagasaki. Just like Hiroshima, the city was basically destroyed and thousands of innocent lives were lost. How was liberalism affected: This lead to great change in societies around the globe which means that there was less liberalism.

    Where: The USA Who: The US, Turkey, and Greece What: The United States Foreign Polict was outlined by Truman and stated that the military needed to provide assistance against the communists. President Truman had received $400 million in order to help out Turkey and Greece. How did it affect liberalism: Liberalism increased because of the growing popularity against communism, communism doesn't have freedoms.

    Where: Soviet Union Who: Soviet Union, Eastern European countries that are alligned with the USSR. What: The purpose of this plan was for the USSR to provide support in order to rebuild parts of eastern Europe. How was liberalism affected: Liberalism was decreased. This is because everyone involved was communist, and communists dont believe in liberalism.

    Where: The USA Who: US, Western Europe What: The point of the Marshall Plan was for the US to provide assistance to Western Europe. The US provided over $15 Billion to help rebuild after World War 2. The Marshall plan was a big point in the formation of NATO. How did it affect liberalism: Liberalism was increased because Western Europe had a rise in their GDP up to 25%. It also helped reindustrialize and rebuild.

    Where: Brussels, Belgium Who: Britain, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg What: The treaty was meant to show that European countries could gete a long and that the US should play a role for security in western Europe. How was liberalism affected: Liberalism was increased as security was increased. Liberalism also increased as more and more european countries became friends.

How was liberalism affected: Liberalism decreased because the freedom of mobility was being restricted.

    Where: Washington, DC, US Who: The 12 founding members were Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, the UK, and the US. What: NATO is a military alliance that currently consists of 28 European countries as well as the US and Canada. How was liberalism affected: Liberalism increased because the allies promissed democracy, liberty, and the rule of law.

    Who: North Korea, South Korea Where: South Korea What: Rebbelions in South Korea agitated the North. North Korea then invaded South Korea. How liberalism was affected: Liberalism was taken away due to the fact that North Korea was communist and believed that everyone should be equal in society.

    Who: Joeseph Stalin (USSR) Where: Soviet Union What: After Stalin dies, Kruschev was put into power. He stated that the USSR could work together with the US. How was liberalism affected: Liberalism increased as tensions between countries decreased.

    Where: Warsaw, Poland Who: The Soviet Union, 7 socialist republics of central and eastern Europe. What: The pact was made in order to create a balance of power with NATO. How was liberalism affected: Liberalism was decreased because all of the countries involved were communist.

    Who: US Allies, Vietnam Where: Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia What: After the communists took over the north, the US started sending weapons in order to support the democratic South. How was liberalism affected: Liberalism decreased at the time because vietnam became a socialist republic.

    Who: Soviets, Hungary Where: Hungary What: A protest against the Soviets broke out and a resistance began. Because of the resistance, a new governmetn was put into place to which they wanted to get out of the Warsaw Pact. The politburo then invaded. The soviets eventually won and communism took over. How liberalism was affected: Liberalism was decreased due to the fact that the Soviets won and put a communist government into place. Communism is the complete opposite of liberalism.

    Where: Colarado Springs, Colarado, US Who: Canada and the US What: NORAD is a defense agreement between the US and Canada to protect North America from Soviets. NORAD allowed the 2 countries to control and give aerospace warnings. How did it affect liberalism: Liberalism increased because of the fact that national security was increased.

He then became really good allies with the Soviet Union in the cold war and disliked the Americans. How was liberalism affected: Liberalism was decreased drastically because Castro believed in Lenninism and wanted to convert Cuba to socialist.

    Who: Berlin, Germany Where: Berlin, Germany What: Over the course of 2 days, German soldiers put down a barbed wire barrier that stretched over 30 miles. The purpose was to restric the eastern citizens from going over to the western part of Berlin. How was Liberalism affected: Liberalism decreased because the citizens were no longer allowed to cross over to wesrern Berlin.

    What: The US financed an invasion on the southwest coast of Cuba.
    How was liberalism affected: The purpose of this event was to increase liberalism. America found out that castro was nationalizing their resources so America funded the invasion.

    Who: US, Soviet Union Where: US, Soviet Union What: President Kennedy agreed to remove all missiles out of Turkey and Southern Italy. In turn, the USSR had to remove all of their missiles from Cuba. How was liberalism affected: Liberalism increased because the security of the world was protected and everyone got to live freely after that without worrying about being bombed.

    Who: Czecholsovakia Where: Czecholslovakia What: In 1968, liberalization started. The allies of the Warsaw Pact invaded and took over until 1990. How liberalism was affected: Liberalism decreased because the allies of the Warsaw pact were communist, and communist is on the complete opposite side of the spectrum.

    Who: USSR, US, Finland Where: Holsinki, Finland What: After 3 years, Nixon signed the SALT 1. These agreements limited the number of weapons such as missiles that cuontries could have. How was liberalism affected: Liberalism increased as these agreements made the world safer from abusive governments using missiles.

The US sent weapons to this religious group in an effort to help. How was liberalism affected? Liberalism increased since the US and some Arabic countries would overule the soviets and prevent communism from spreading.

    Who: Poland, Soviets Where: Poland What: Solidarity in Poland came out in 1980 as a trade union. The USSR had to set up a negotiation with Poland as solidarity grew. An election was called in 1989 and the liberals were elected. There was then a big anti-soviet movement. How liberalism was affected: Liberalism increased as communism faded away in Poland.

The Berlin Wall being taked down is a symbolism of the end of the war. How liberalism was affected: Liberalism increased because people were now allowed to move freely across eastern/western germany.
