Cold War begins
The exact date isn't agreed on, but the war did start in 1947 shortly after the Yalta Conference. Which was held with FDR, Stalin and Churchill. -
Berlin Blockade and Airlift
During the begining of thr war, teh Soviets blocked the western Allies' roads, railways and canal access to the sectors of Berlin under Western control. This blockade was an attempt to limit the ability to the US, Great Britain and France. -
Korean War
The Koran War was the battle between the North and the South. This began when the North Korean Communist army crossed the boarder and invaded the Non-Communist South Korea. -
Space Race
The Space Race was between the Soviet Union and the US for supremacy in spaceflight capability. On October 4th 1957, the first man made satalite was launched into orbit by the Soviets, in which they named it the Sputnik. A year later, the US launched it's own satalite into orbit, named the Explorer 1, and later made the organization called NASA. Lastly, in 1969 when the US had the first man walk on the moon, they had "won" the space race. -
U-2 Reconnaissance Plane
A U-2 spy plane flown by CIA agent Francis Gary Powers, was shot down because he was flying in Soviet airspace. The pilot was performing aerial reconnaissance and this was initally planned to be hidden from everyone but once the Soviets came to the US with evidence from the crash, we were forced to tell the truth. This was a huge embarressment to the US. -
Bay of Pigs
The Bay of Pigs was a failed military invasion of Cuba and was planned to overthrow Fidel Castro. This mission was taken on by the CIA-sponsered paramilitary group Brigade 2506 and was a disaster from the start. While broadcasting the plan, a radio station on the beach that hadn't been taken out yet got all the info and Fidel's men were ready for the US's attack. This was also embarrassing to the US. -
Reagan Visits the Wall
This wall was built in 1961 by Communists in order to keep Germans from escaping into West Berlin. This wall extended for miles and stood as a symbol of decades of old Cold War. Ronald Reagan visited and gave a speech to the people of West Berlin, thus years later, the wall was finally taken down completely in the end of 1990. This was due to the collapse of Communism in Eastern Europe. -
Strategic Arms Limitation Talks
Otherwise known as SALT, they were 2 rounds of bilateral conferences and corresponding international treaties involving the US and the USSR on the issue of armament control. SALT 2 was a conference that talked about the use of nuclear weapons. -
Cuban Missile Crisis
This was a very scary situation which was a 13-day confrontation between the US and USSR after knowledge of Soviet ballisitic missiles were deployed in Cuba. The potential disaster was avoided when the US and the Soviet leader, Nikita Khrushchev, agreeed to remove the Cuban missiles in exchange for the US to promise not to invade Cuba. This was also because of Kennedy agreeing to remove missiles from Turkey. -
Reunited Germany
On August 31st, two parts of Germany signed a unification treaty and on October 1st, the Allies suspended rights to Germany. on October 3rd, East and West Germany joined together. -
End of the Cold War
After many dictatorships had fallen and many gained independece, this is when the Soviet Union finally gave in and the country had left the president. However, no one really won the war, it was just an act to end communisium.
