    Towards the end of WWI, France wanted to reestablish its colony of Vietnam. The Vietnamese however fought back, forcing the French to give up. Then Vietnam was "temporarily divided into northern and southern halves.
  • Berlin Airlift

    Berlin Airlift
    There were many conflicts going on in Berlin, where the Soviets blocked all "land, rail and water routes into West Berlin." Then all Western leaders refused to continue with this plan, and made what was called the 'Berlin Airlift'. This plan was to get cargo planes to deliver and supply Berlin every 30 seconds, and it was a major success.

    Berlin Wall
    Germany was then divided as the East to be communist and the West to be democratic. This caused many civilians to move to how they wanted their government to be, and many others traveled across the country everyday to find jobs. This then led to the Berlin Wall to be created to keep out all those traveling across.

    In 1949, the Soviets first tested the atomic bomb, and this immediately gave the soviets a great advantage against the U.S. But then the U.S went beyond with the test of the hydrogen bomb, but the Soviet Union was right behind them when they tested the same one less than a year later.

    There was conflict between North and South Korea on how they wanted their government to be. North Korea had first attacked the South, because "their goal was to unite the country under a communist government." The U.S and the UN then started forming their military to stop the invasion, but North Korea couldn't be stopped, and they invaded.

    There was a treaty proposed to the Soviet Union from U.S President Eisenhower. This treaty open skies treaty was made so each country can fly over each others territory and make sure to get accurate information about their weapons.

    The West had been controlling the Suez Canal, but then Egypt came along and angered the West when they took over. Britain, France, and Israel then led to an attack on Egypt.

    A communist government was installed after the rebels under Fidel Castro overthrew the dictator. This then caused Castro to make centrally economic plans and close-ties with the Soviet Union.

    Belgium Ended Colonial Control Over Congo
    Congo, (which is now known as the Democratic Republic of the Congo), was taken over by Joseph Mobutu after the Belgians left. Many "Western countries supported his dictatorship because they believed he would have a good ally against the Soviet Union."

    There was a crisis in Cuba about missiles, and this concerned both sides (U.S and Soviet Union) to make progress. This is when the 'Test Ban Treaty' was created to not allow any nuclear testing in "the atmosphere, space, and underwater."
