The term is most often used to refer to two periods in the history of the United States which are referred to by this name.
  • TRUMAN DOCTRINE

    TRUMAN DOCTRINE

    In places where communism threatened to expand, American aid might prevent a takeover. By vigorously pursuing this policy, the United States might be able to contain communism within its current borders. The policy became known as the TRUMAN DOCTRINE, as the President outlined these intentions with his request for monetary aid for Greece and Turkey.
  • MARSHALL PLAN

    MARSHALL PLAN

    To avoid antagonizing the Soviet Union, Marshall announced that the purpose of sending aid to Western Europe was completely humanitarian, and even offered aid to the communist states in the east. Congress approved Truman's request of $17 billion over four years to be sent. The MARSHALL PLAN created an economic miracle in Western Europe. Western European industries were producing twice as much as they had been the year before war broke out.

    BERLIN WALL

    The official purpose was to keep from entering East Germany and undermining the socialist state. The head of the East German announced that citizens of the GDR could cross the border whenever they pleased. That night, ecstatic crowds swarmed the wall. Some crossed freely into West Berlin, while others brought hammers and picks and began to chip away at the wall itself. To this day, the Berlin Wall remains one of the most powerful and enduring symbols of the Cold War.
  • CUBAN MISSILE CRISIS

    The Cuban Missile Crisis occurred in 1962 when the Soviet Union began to install nuclear missiles in Cuba. The United States refused to allow this and, after thirteen tense days and many secret negotiations, the Soviet Union agreed to remove the missiles.
