  • United Nations Formed

    The United Nations is a global diplomatic and political organization dedicated to international peace and stability. Established in 1946 after the following events of World War II, when international leaders proposed creating a new global organization to maintain peace and avoid the abuse of war. The United Nations initially had just 51 member states.
  • Truman Doctrine

    Pronouncement by U.S President Harry S. Truman declaring immediate economic and military aid to the governments of Greece, threatened by communist insurrection, under pressure from the Soviet expansion in the Mediterranean Sea.
  • Hollywood 10

    The Hollywood Ten included a group of screenwriters, actors, directors, and musicians who were denied employment because of their political beliefs or association. These individuals were a banned from their word on the basis of their alleged membership or sympathy towards the American Communist Party or refusal to assist federal investigation into Communist Party activities.
  • Marshall Plan

    The Marshall Plan also known as the European Recovery Program, was a U.S program providing aid to Western Europe following the devastation of World War II. It provided more than 15 billion to help finance rebuilding efforts on the continent.
  • Nato Formed

    The NATO's purpose was to secure peace in Europe, to promote cooperation among its members and to guard their freedom. All this in the context of countering threat posed at the time by the Soviet Union.
  • Korean War

    The Korean War began as five years of tension between the Korean Peninsula occured. When the Northern Korean people's army invaded South Korea in a coordinated general attack at several strategic points along the line dividing communist North Korea from the non-communist Republic of Korea in the South. North Korea aimed to militarily conquer South Korea therefore unify Korea under the communist North Korean regime.
  • U.S. officials enter Vietnam War

    The center of the conflict was the desire of North Vietnam, which had defeated the French colonial administration of Vietnam, to unify the entire country under a single communist regime modeled after those of the Soviet Union and China. Although the South Vietnamese government fought to preserve a Vietnam more aligned with West U.S military advisors.
  • Space Race/Sputnik

    The Soviet Union successfully launched Sputnik-1,the worlds first artificial satellite it orbited around the earth for 98 minutes. The launch marked the start of the space age and the US and USSR space race, ledding to the creation of NASA.
  • Bay of Pigs

    The Bay of Pigs invasion was a failed attack launched by the CIA during the Kennedy administration to push Cuban leader Fidel Castro from power, as The U.S. State Department and the CIA attempted to remove Castro. The CIA then launched a full-scale attack invasion of Cuba by 1,400 American-trained Cubans who fled from their homes when Castro took over. However the invaders where badly outnumbered by Castro's troops later surrendering after less than 24 hours.
  • Berlin Wall goes up

    The Berlin Wall was a barrier that divided Germany from 1961 to 1989, aimed at preventing East Germans from fleeing to stop the economically disastrous migration of workers. The barrier contained guarded towers place along large concrete walls and barbed wires. The Eastern Bloc claimed that the WAll was to protect its population from fascist elements conspiring to prevent the "will of the people" in building a socialist state in East Germany.
  • Soviets invade Afghanistan

    The soviet Union intervened in support of the Afghan communist government in its conflicts with anti-communist during the Afghan War. Afghanistan centrist government headed by Pres. Mohammad Daud Khan, was overthrown by left wing military officers. Power was then emerged into the Peoples Democratic Party of Afghanistan . The new government forged close ties with the Soviet Union, launched ruthless purges and social reforms were bitterly resented by the anti-communist population.
  • Berlin Wall comes down

    The Berlin Wall came down when the head of the East German Communist Party announced that citizens of the GDR could cross the border whenever they pleased
