  • Formation Of The United Nations

    An intergovernmental organization prevent and solve conflicts in the world. Due to all the deaths in WWII the world wanted prevent another World War worrying that hundreds of millions lives would be lost this time.`
  • Period: to

    Use of Policy of Containtment

    A policy of the US to contain the spread of communism. It was in response because of spread of communism in China, Korea, Vietnam, and Eastern Europe. It wasn't a plan to destroy communism but to prevent the spread of it.
  • NATO Formed

    Was a formation of a military alliance between the US, Canada, UK, France, and several other European nations. This was in response to Soviet aggression in Eastern Europe. NATO rule was that an attack on one of the members was seen as an attack on all members of NATO.
  • Truman Doctirine

    President Truman established that the U.S. would provide political, military, and economical support to all democratic nation under an authoritarian threat. This now got the U.S. very into foreign affairs while in the early 20th century there had more domestic concerns. The U.S. now destined to be involved somehow in any world conflicts.
  • Marshall Plan

    When the U.S. gave $13 billion to western Europe. It was a plan to rebuild war devastated regions economies. It was also a way to prevent the spread of communism by making Democratic nations more prosperous.

    Berlin Air;ift

    On June 24, 1948 the Soviets blocked off all ways by land to get to Berlin. In response the US and UK airlifted food and other resources to Berlin. It ended on May 12, 1949 when the Soviets lifted the blockade
  • Creation of Israel

    After WWII the UK and the US wanted to establish a safe haven for Jews. They did but they did it kind of the wrong way the carved a part out of Palestine and they weren't just going to give up their homes. Many other countries came to their aid which led to conflict in the middle east. There is still violence between Israel and Palestine today.

    Korean War

    A war fought between the North and South Koreans. On June 25, 1950 the North Korean army crossed the 38th parallel behind artillery fire. South Korea was almost completely captured. But then U.S. troops in the Pacific landed in South Korea and pushed the North Koreans all the way back to the Chinese border. Not wanting a Democratic nation close to their borders the Chinese sent thousands of troops into Korea. The war ended in a stalemate back at the 38th parallel in July, 27 1953.
  • Warsaw Pact Formed

    Was the signing of a counter to NATO between the USSR and communist controlled eastern Europe. It was seen as a symbol of Soviet dominance in Eastern Europe. It was a way for the Soviet to build up and strengthen the military in Eastern Europe.

    Vietnam War

    Civil war between North (Communist) and South (Democracy) Vietnam. The Vietcong were communist sympathizers from the North that enacted guerrilla warfare in the South. The U.S. was able to hold the South but do to anti-war protest at home the U.S. withdrew in 1973. The North Vietnamese captured Saigon in 1975 marking the end of the war.
  • Berlin Wall is Built

    1961 East German authorities built a wall to divide Germany. Which marked the so called “Iron Curtain” on Europe. Many East Germans tried to flee to the west. It got to as 2,000 a day.

    Cuban Missile Crisis

    The Soviet Union put missiles that could deliver nuclear warheads in Cuba in response of the US having them Italy in Turkey. This was closet the Cold War came to full scale nuclear war. The US established Naval blockades to prevent anymore weapons from getting into Cuba. The USSR and the US eventually agreed that the Soviets would remove weapons in Cuba if the US remove them in Turkey and Italy.
  • Camp David Accords

    It was a secret meeting between the US, Israel, and Egypt. The US was trying to get peace between these two nations. A treaty was eventually signed after 12 days of talking. c

    Implementation of Perestroika and Glasnost

    This was opening up of the USSR they were known were able to hold friendly talk to countries such as the US and it’s allies. It was also the rebuilding of the Soviet economy. It made the USSR generally less strict of a nation and more prosperous of a place to live.
  • Fall of Berlin Wall

    Due the starting hatred against Communism the Soviets were pressured into letting people freely crossed the Berlin Wall. Ecstatic thousands of people crossed into West Germany, leaving there to be no more point of having the wall. The fall of the wall showed that communism lost and the Iron Curtain was removed from Europe.
  • Soviet Union Dissolves

    A few days before the Soviet Union dissolved representatives met from 11 of the Soviet Republics and declared it would be best if they all went out on their own. The USSR also fell to largely due to the great number of radical reforms that Soviet president Mikhail Gorbachev implemented during his six years as the leader of the USSR. The US now emerged from the Cold War as the strongest military and economy.
  • Oslo Accords Agreement

    It was a process to hopefully establish peace between Arab nations and Israel. The United States assisted and hosted the talks in the White House.
