Padlock Law
This act was passed by the province of Quebec on March 24th, 1937. The act prohibited anyone to make propoganda about communism or bolshevisimin any sort of advertisments. This meant no videos, posters, advertisments of any kind. any person who was caught violating this act would be "padlocked" and sentenced to three months in prision -
Guezenko Affair
The Guezenko AffairIgor Guezenko was born in the soviet union in 1919, and was trained to be a spy in canada. In 1943, Igor was placed to be a spy in Ottawa, in the soviet embassy. For two years he was a spy in Ottawa, where he enciphered outgoing messages and deciphered incoming messages for the GRU. He defected on September 5th, 1945. Igor guezenko was responsible for exposing Joseph Stalin's efforts to steal nuclear secrets. -
Berlin Blockade
The Berlin BolckadeIn 1948 the USSR blocked the western allies access to their portion of berlin, in attempt for the USSR to start providing all of berlin with their supplies and eventually taking control of all of berlin. The allies organized airlifts to start flying the food into berlin by plane. By the spring of 1949 the effort was clearly succeeding, and had brought more food trhen ever before. In May 1949 the blockade was Lifted. -
NATO Alliance
The NATO alliance was formed between Belgium, Britian, Canada, Denmark, France, Ireland, Italy, Luxemburg, The Netherlands, Portugal, and the United States. The NATO alliance states that when any of the countries in the alliance are attacked, then they will recieve support from all of the other countries in the alliance -
Korean War
The Korean War Part 1In 1950 communist North Korea and Comminust China decided to attack South Korea. The United States supported soutn korea, so the UN members were called on by the Security Council to "render every assistance" to South Korea. 25,000 canadian soilders saw action in this war, with 1000 wounded and 406 killed. The war was over on July 27, 1953, but Canadian troops were asked to stay until 1955. -
WARSAW Pact
The WARSAW pact is made up of Bulgiria, Czechsolvakia, East Germany, Hungary, Poland, Romania, and the USSR. It was basically whatthe USSR has formed to be against the NATO forces that the allies are in. It was also created so the Soviets could maintain control over Central and East Germany -
Suez Crisis and Lester Pearson
Suez CrisisThe suez crisis was a confrintation between Egypt and Isreal (allied with France and Canada). Lester Pearson was Canada's Secrcatary of State for external affairs. Lester pearson was awarded the nobel prize for ending the Suez Crisis, by creating the peace proposal. -
Draft Dodgers
Draft DodgersThe vietnam war was between South Vietnam, and the anti-communist countries, against northern vietnam, and the communist countries. The war lasted almost 20 years, resulting in Northern Vietnam taking control and making vietnam a commuist country. Draft Dodgers were people who were avoiding conscription in canada, and they would protest against the war. the main way for them to protest would be for the men to burn all of their drafting cards, and not jointhe war. -
NORAD and the DEW Line
The North American Aerospace Defense treaty was signed between Canada and the United States on August 1st, 1957. This provides aerospace warning about nuclear attack on North America. The Distant Early Warning line was set up by the Americans to warn North America about sea and land invasion during the war. -
Nuclear Warheads in Canada
Bomarc MisilesIn 1958, the government announced an agreement with the US to deploy 2 squadrons of ramjet powered bomarc missiles. The bomarc missiles were made to replace the cancellation of the avro arrow, and the 2 missiles were sent out to North Bay, Ontario, and LaMacaza, Quebec. When these missiles were deployes, canada did not know that they were each filled with a nuclear warhead. When the people found out about the warheads, there were protests, and in the end they were disallowed by the government. -
Avro Arrow
The avro Arrow was a fighter plane designed by Avor Canada, and it was made up based off of a design study that started in 1953. Its cancellation caused a large loss of jobs, about 14,00 jobs in Canada. It was cancelled because the PM (John Diefenbaker) thought it was too expensive to keep on producing. -
Cuban Missile Crisis
The Cuban Missile Crisis was a two-week confrintation between the United States, and the USSR. An American spy plane had picked up photographs of missiles on cuba, so they considered attacking from the air and the sea. The crisis was resolved when the Americans agreed to take their missiles out of italy and Turkey, if the USSR took theirs off of Cuba. This was an end to the scariest time of the Cold War -
Canada Soviet Hockey Series
Game winning goalThe summit series, was a "best of 8" series held between the USSR and Canada, during the times of the clod war. Canada and russia had both won 3 games, and tied one. In the 8th game, Paul Henderson scored with 34 seconds left to put canada up 6-5. This goal ended up being the game winner for Canada, and Canada winning this competition gave Canadians a great pride in their country. -
Fall of Berlin Wall
Fall of the Berlin WallWhen Hungary disabled its border defences with Austria, many eastern germans escaped by travelling through hungary. Protests broke out, and people now wanted to leave to czechslovakia. The wall was taken down overtime, but the offical date for it was on Noverber 9th, 1989. -

Fall of the USSR\the USSR ceased to exist on december 26, 1991. The end of the state also marked the end of the cold war. What was the Soviet Union, is now Russia
