Marshall Plan
After WWII many countries in Europe were economically crumbled. To prevent the Soviet's from influencing all of Europe with the ideas of Communism the U.S. sent many items to supply those in need. The idea for giving materials to countries was to hopefully get the European continent back to full scale and as prosperious as possible. This was a devestation to the Soviets because any person who took aid from America no longer had the idea of Communism. -
Creation of NATO
The agreement between nations means that if one country is attacked by another country not involved in the alliance all countries all have to mutually help in fighting efforts. The Korean War really helped get countries to join and help with getting NATO booming. -
Soviets create & test nuclear bomb
After WWII both the U.S. and Britian had either created or was in the process of creation of a nuclear bomb. To prevent from falling behind the Soviet Union immediatly went into trying to get one of their own. They had many people working on nukes, by working in plants, or sending spies to different countries nuclear sights in hope to attain information giving them the "secret recipe." The U.S. learned about this when several spies were arrested for supposedly giving them the information. -
The Korean War
This was direct fighting to prevent the spread of Communism, which were the ways of North Korea, into the capitalistic American controled South Korea. The 38th parrallel seperated the Korea's and the North Koreans invaded the South the fighting began. The U.S. and other non-communistic countries sent troops to fight in the aid of the South. When the war ended: no peace deal was created, and led to the complete isolation of North Korea to most of the world. -
US creates and tests hydrogen bomb
The hydrogen bomb gave the US a slight advantage over the Soviets when first created. It was 1000 times more powerful than an atomic bomb, and it seemed that its creation was more of a negative than a positive. By 1970 7 nations had hydrogen bombs, which was a very serious weapon in Cold War era fighting. -
Warsaw Pact
8 Communist countries agreed to a treaty where if one country gets attacked they will come to the others rescue. It was eqivilant to the creation of NATO in which the alliance was pledged between many countries. This consisted of Euopean countries, but mainly Soviet ideas. -
Vietnam War
South Vietnam supported by the U.S. and other non-communistic countries were invaded by the North who hoped to spread the ideas of Communism. The U.S. Congress decides to keep withdrawing troops leading to Communism growing in Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos. -
Soviet launch Sputnik
This satellite consisted of 4 antennas in the lower earth orbit that sent radio pulses around the world. It triggered the space race, and was a big contributing factor to the Cold War. Everyone wanted to be the first person to reach space, and walk on the moon. -
Bay of Pigs
This was an unsuccessfull invasion of Cuba. When an allied power leader was overthrown, Cuba broke ties with the U.S., and became allies with the Soviet Union. At the time of the U.S. invasion, the U.S. and Soviets were at the midst of the Cold War. Eventual leader of Cuba, Fidel Castro led the movement to spread Communism in alligence with the Soviets. -
Berlin Wall Goes Up
This barrier seperated west Germany from eastern Communist Germany. The US sent care packages to those under now Soviet rule. Guard towers, and anti-vehicle trenches were installed to keep outsiders out. The communist side constisted of some non de-Nazified members. -
Cuban Missle Crisis
The Cuban Missle Crisis is when Soviet Union sent nuclear weapons to Cuba and threated to use them. The US saw the construction of the nuclear base and eventually at the end of the war destroyed the plant, and got rid of all nukes. This was a very serious case since US had nukes close to Russia in Turkey. They had nukes close to now in Cuba. -
1980 Olympic Hockey game
"Miracle on Ice" was when the highly publized/ world champion Soviet Union was defeated by the U.S. made up by amateur hockey players. This was a very serious game since the U.S. was going to holdout on the 1980 summer Olympics in Moscow cause of them invading Afghanistan. Coach Herb Brooks knew that if the U.S. won it would break the Soviets hope in destroying the U.S. -
US invades Grenada
They invaded to keep from the Communist party from gaining control. After a matter of weeks they restored order, and keep the constitutional government in power. The Soviets and Cubans held American medical students hostage strengthing the tension of the Cold War. -
Fall of Berlin Wall
The East Germans had successfully escaped Germany through Hungry, and when at the embassy in werst Germany they refused to return. After several demostrations where protests broke out, they allowed people to move back and forth through the "Germany's." Eventually taking down the way some time later. -
Collapse of the Soviet Union
The seperation of the Russia made 15 new countries. The Communist party was no longer in power, and peace was starting to come back to tension holders of the Cold War. The nationalist movement of America was now gaining its influence in Russia.
