The marshall plan was a program designed by the United States. It was a plan for the US to help European countries rebuild their economies after WWII. Also they wanted to have allies in Europe to prevent the spread of communism by the Soviet Union. -

Sputnik was the first artificial earth satellite. It was launched by the soviet union and was an ignitor for the infamous "space race". The US and Soviet Union were in competion for space program supremacy. -
Vietnam War
The Vietnam war was a war where the Soviet Union occupied Northern Vietnam and fought the South in an attempt to spread communism. The US fought against the North with the south but ended up losing the war. -
Bay of Pigs
The Bay of Pigs was a failed invasion of Cuba by the US. The US was fought off in less than three days by the Cuban armed forces led by prime minister Fidel Castro. -
The Berlin Wall Goes Up
The Berlin wall was set up in Germany to seperate East and West Germany. However the city of Berlin actually completely lies in East Germany. -
Cuban Missile Crisis
The Cuban missile crisis was during the Cold War where the Soviet Union placed nuclear weapons in Cuba. This was the closest the war ever got to getting nuclear and it was a 13 day dispute between them and the US that almost got really ugly. -
US sends a man to the moon
The US ultimately won the "spave race", when they landed apollo 11 on the moon and American Neil Armstrong was the first man on the moon. -
Olympic Rivalry: 1972 basketball game
The US played the Soviets in the Olympic championship in Russia. The picture shows the US celebrating for a moment when they thought they won, however a layup by the Soviets was ruled before the buzzer. The US members of the team still feel they won to this day and never accepted their silver medals. -
1980 Olympic Hockey game
The Soviets had been dominant in the international hockey game, winning alost every gold medal since 1954. However, the US pulled off the "miracle on ice" when they defeated the Soviets for the gold medal in 1980. -
US Invades Grenada
The US invaded Grenada and won in a matter of weeks. We invaded because of the weak structure of their government and economy, and the increasing threat of spreading communism. -
German Reunification/Fall of Berlin Wall
The destruction of the wall was a result of the reunification of Germany. The reunification was more of an idea more than a literal occurance because much of the wall was not actually taken down at first. -
Collapse of the Soviet Union
The day after the Soviet President resigned, the Soviet Union was officially dissoluted. 15 commonwealths were made into 15 independent states and the Soviet Union was no more.
