    The Red Scare

    The Red Scare was an period of fear in the hearts of American. People feared that their way of life was threatened by communism. Much of this had to do with Joseph McCarthy, who made radical untrue acussations against members of the government and the military. This caused HUAC to do a search for communists in Hollywood. They were afraid they would sneak commie propaganda into films. The Hollywood 10 were 10 actors/actresses/directors who refused to testify. They were black-listed from Hollywood
  • HUAC

    HUAC
    The House Un-American Activities Committee was created to search for and bring communist spies to justice. This made many Americans paranoid and made them think communists could be anywhere. After the fall of McCarthyism, the organization was scrapped.
  • Yalta Conference

    Yalta Conference
    Churchill, Roosevelt, and Stalin met at Yalta to discuss the reorganization of post-war Europe. This was the second of three meetings with 3 men.
  • UN Formed

    UN Formed
    After the failure of the league of nations, and after WW2, the US and other formed the United Nations. The groups purpose was to end struggles between countries in a non-violent manor.
  • Potsdam Confernece

    This was a meeting of world leaders (including Churchill, Truman, and Stalin) to address the issue of Nazi Germany's punishment. 9 weeks earlier of Germany's surrender.
  • The Truman Doctrine

    The Truman Doctrine
    This was what many believe to be the spark of the Cold War. The Truman Doctrine was a policy set forth by the U.S. President Harry S Truman in a speech on March 12, 1947 stating that the U.S. would support Greece and Turkey with economic and military aid to prevent their falling into thehands of communism.

    Marshall Plan
    This was a plan created by the US to help rebuild the economies of many of the European countries affected by the ww2. The would do this by sending food, supplies, etc. The Soviets rejected the plan.
  • CIA Formed

    CIA Formed
    The CIA was created by the passing of the National Security Act of 1947. It is the first peactime intelligence agency. The function of the council was to advise the president on domestic, foreign, and military policies so that they may cooperate more efficiently.
  • Berlin Airlift

    Berlin Airlift
    The US began sending supplies to the USSR controlled portion of Germany. The United States Air Force and the United Kingdom's Royal Air Force flew over 200,000 flights in one year, providing up to 4700 tons of daily necessities such as fuel and food to the Berliners. The Berlin Airlift ended on May 12 1949.

    The North American Treaty Organiztion is a pact formed between several nations following the end of WW2. The course of the Cold War lead NATO into a collision with the Warsaw Pact. This organization is still in effect today.

    Communism began as a movement that paved the way for the liberation of the proletariat. Proletariat is that class of society which lives entirely from the sale of its labor. The proletariat, or the class of proletarians, is, in a word, the working class of the 19th century in China.

    Korean War

    World War II divided Korea into a Communist, northern half and an American-occupied southern half, divided at the 38th parallel. The Korean War (1950-1953) began when the North Korean Communist army crossed the 38th Parallel and invaded non-Communist South Korea. In 1953 a peace treaty was signed at Panmunjom that ended the Korean War, returning Korea to a divided status essentially the same as before the war. Neither the war nor its outcome did much to lessen the era's Cold War tension.

    The Warsaw Pact was created in response to the formation of NATO, whose goal was to end the spread of communism. Included such countries as Albania, Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary, Poland, the USSR, and others.

    Vietnam War

    North Vietnam was taken over by Ho Chi Minh and the Vietcong. The US escalated it's military presense when North Vietnam fell to communism. The Vietcong attacked a major city in South Korea on their New Year. This was known as the Tet Offensive. The Kent State shootings happened because people at the University were protesting and police killed 4 people. President Nixon began Vietnamization due to the major protests.

    The Space Race

NASA was established by the National Aeronautics and Space Act on July 29, 1958 in response to the launch of Sputnik on October 4th 1957. The Space Race ended by the first manned mission to land on the Moon on 20 July 1969 by NASA.

    Cuban Missile Crisis

    Fidel Castro and his guerrilla army took over Cuba on January 1 1959. The US was very concerned due to the fact that they were communist. The US sent spy planes to investigate whether or not Cuba was pointing nuclear missiles at the US. It turns out, Cuba was holding nuclear missiles given to them by the USSR. The US promised to not invade Cuba if the USSR removed their missiles. They complied.

    On May 1st 1960 a U2 plane was shot down by the USSR. President Eisenhower was forced to admit that the plane was a servailence plane that was taking pictures of Russian military bases.
  • Bay of Pigs

    Bay of Pigs
    The Bay of Pigs was a strategic strike on Cuba by US trained former Cuban soldier. The point of the attack was to overthrow the Castro-controlled communist government. The mission was unsuccessful and that was the end of the Cuban missile crisis.
  • Berlin Wall Built

    Berlin Wall Built
    The Berlin Wall was a barrier constructed by the German Democratic Republic starting on 13 August 1961, that completely cut off West Berlin from surrounding East Germany and from East Berlin. The barrier included guard towers placed along large concrete walls, which circumscribed a wide area that contained anti-vehicle trenches, "fakir beds" and other defenses. The fall of the Berlin Wall paved the way for German reunification, which was formally concluded on 3 October 1990.
