In 1957, the Soviets launched their first satellite into space. This got the United States’ attention because this was the first object launched in space called Sputnik. The Americans got very worried that the Soviet Union got too far ahead of them with technology that they may not be able to catch up to their level. Six day War
The Six Day War happened in 1967 because there was tension between Israel and Egypt, Jordan, and Syria. On June 5th, the day it all started, Israel attacked Egypt, Syria, and Jordan’s air forces with jets. Throughout the war, they captured hundreds of tanks and 70 percent of their military equipment. This decreased their chances of winning the invasion. For only lasting six days, about 700 Israeli were killed and about 4,500 were injured. -

For the other side, about 11,700 soldiers were injured and about 18,000 were killed. When the last day of the war came around, Israel claimed the Gaza Strip, West bank, Golan Heights, and the Sinai Peninsula to the Suez Canal. -

This six day war was a significant battle during the Cold war because Israel claimed a great amount of land during the time of the Cold war. Also, thousands of people were injured and killed. This was one of the battles that was fought that had so many deaths in very few days. Overall, these six days may have gone by fast, but it has had a large impact on the countries fighting and the ones surrounding. -

“The Eagle has landed,” some famous words when Neil Armstrong landed on the moon in 1969. Armstrong said, “That’s one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind.” Just landing on the moon and stepping on another planet had a very positive impact on the United States. This showed other countries that they were higher up in the world and more developed just because they sent their men to the moon. -

In 1972, the Strategic Arms Limitation Treaty (SALT) was signed by Richard Nixon and Leonid Brezhnev. This treaty was signed in Moscow. Also, this was the first time during the Cold War when both the United States and the Soviet Union agreed. They both agreed to limit the number of nuclear missiles. The SALT was made so they could contain the arms race. The treaty was being made up in November of the year before being signed by Nixon and Brezhnev. -

The “Miracle on Ice” happened in 1980 when the United States men’s hockey team won against the Soviets. This game happened at Lake Placid, New York for the Winter Olympics. This was significant because the Soviets had won six of the seven games before hand. Because they beat the Soviets, the United States went to play for the gold medal and won over Finland. On the other hand, the Soviets won a silver medal when they won against Sweden. -

This hockey event that happened in 1980 is a well-known and unforgetting day. This is significant because the United States team won against the Soviet team that won many previous Olympic games. The Intermediate Range Nuclear Forces Treaty or INF treaty of 1987 was an agreement between both sides, United States and the Soviet Union. This treaty was made to eliminate the short and intermediate-range missiles. It also eliminated the use of nuclear ground launched missiles with ranges of 300 to 3,400 miles. One thing that the INF treaty didn’t eliminate was the launch of sea missiles. -

This was very important during the war because the INF treaty was an agreement during the war. This helped bring the two sides together to help end the war and bring peace to both sides. Even though this only was to eliminate nuclear ground missiles, this treaty brought the United States and the Soviet Union together to come to an agreement. -
