  • Yugoslavia becomes Communist

    Yugoslavia becomes Communist
    Yugoslavia officially became Communist and changed their name to Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia on the date listed above. Yugoslavia also joined up with Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Montenegro and Macedonia when they became the Socialist Federal Republic. Yugoslavia becoming communist was another event in which containment did not work for the United States.
  • China becomes Communist

    China becomes Communist
    This was the first day of the Chinese Civil War. China was divided between the Nationalist with Chiang Kai-shek and Communist wiht Mao Zedong. The United States sided with the Nationalists because even though Kai-shek was corrupt, they were still against the Communists and Zedong. The US wanted to contain Communism in the USSR and get it out of China, but Chiang Kai-shek fled to Taiwan with the remnants in May 1949 giving the victory to Communism in China. Containment did not work in Asia.
  • Creation of NATO

    Creation of NATO
    NATO stands for North Atlantic Treaty Organization, and the date listed is the official signing of the treaty. NATO is a military alliance with the United States, Canada, and various European countries. NATO connects to the Cold War because all of the countries involved would help one another out in military battle against Communist countries at the time.
  • Korean War

    Korean War
    This is the date that the Korean war formally began. The United States joined the conflict to aid South Korea. The United States and South Korea fought against China and North Korea. The war resulted in Korea staying divided by the DMZ, still to present day. The Korean war results to the Cold War because even though Communism was contained in the North, Korea still fell to Communism.
  • Creation of the Warsaw Pact

    Creation of the Warsaw Pact
    The Warsaw Pact was a military alliance among Communist countries during the Cold War. The pact was created in response to NATO. It was ended on July 1, 1991. The Warsaw Pact relates back to the Cold War because while the NATO countries could rely on one another, the Communist countries could also rely on each other.
  • Soviet launch Sputnik

    Soviet launch Sputnik
    This date was when the Soviet Union changed history by successfully launching the world's first artificial satellite, Sputnik. Sputnik was the size of a beach ball and orbited the Earth in 98 minutes. Sputnik was launched as part of the Space Race between the United States and Soviet Union during the Cold War. The space race was specifically between 1955 to 1972.
  • Detente

    Detente
    Detente is French meaning to release from tension. It is the name given to a time during the Cold War in which the United States and the Soviet Union had a better relationship. The leaders of both nations had more clear communication because Nixon was the first United States president to visit Moscow on the date listed above.
  • Strategic Arms Limitation Treaty

    Strategic Arms Limitation Treaty
    Strategic Arms Limitation Treaty/Talks or SALT were negotiations between the United States and Soviet Union during the Cold War. SALT was about the manufacture of strategic missiles capable of carrying nuclear weapons. The treaty was signed on the date above. This was part of the arms race during the Cold War era.
