Berlin Airlift
The Soviets blocked all access to western Berlin by blocking the railroads, roads, and all waterways. The Soviets tried to take over western Berlin by choking off its supplies. In response, the United States and Great Britain flew supplies into western Berlin. -
Creation of NATO
The United States and other European countries formed a mutual military defence alliance to respond to any (Soviet) attacks. This meant that if one country was attacked, then the other countries in NATO had to come to it's aid and help fight. -

Communist North Korea invaded Democratic South Korea 1950. The United Nations responded by coming to South Korea's aid. The United States played a very important role in the Korean War. -

This was a mutual military defense alliance between the Soviet Union and Soviet satellite states in response to NATO. -

Vietnam War
The Vietnam War was a war fought between North and South Vietnam. America eventually sent troops and weapons in 1965 to help South Vietnam continue to be a democratic country. America did this because North Vietnam was communist and was being supported by the USSR and other communist countries. America withdrew in 1973 and the Paris Peace Accords helped to bring an end to the war. -
Sputnik
The Soviet Union launched the first man-made satellite into orbit around the Earth. This put the Soviet Union ahead in the space race. -
Construction of the Berlin Wall
The German Democratic Republic of east Berlin built a wall through Berlin in which they tried to block the "fascist" ideas of west Germany from coming over to east Germany. The(real) reason it was built was to stop the emigration of east Berlin citizens from emigrating to western Berlin and possibly western Germany. -
Cuban Missile Crisis
The Soviets were supplying Cuba with nuclear ballistic missiles. The Soviets wanted to increase their nuclear strike capability in response to the US nuclear missiles in Turkey. -
Moon Landing
The United States sent the first humans to the moon. This put them ahead of the Soviets in the Space Race. -
Destruction of the Berlin Wall
This was when the east Berlin government said that citizens could cross from east Berlin to west Berlin and vice-versa. This happened due to the political unrest in east Berlin.
