Containment/ Iron Curtain
Containment was a policy created by the U.S. to prevent the spread of communism. The creator of the doctrine was George F. Kennan. The iron curtain was a boundary that seperated Europe into two sections. The Soviet Union wanted itself and its allies to be seperated from the west and any non-communist states. -

Iwo Jima
After the U.S defeated Japan the U.S was willing to pay the price because Iwo Jima was an ideal site for an air base. Stalin agreed to allow France to be the fourth occupying power in Germany. U.S. Marines raisd the american flag on Mount Suribachi. -
Ernie Pyle
Ernie pyle is killed. He was one of the famous writers that wrote about the war. He died while in action by a machine gun blast. He was 45. -
Mother Cabrini
Mother Frances Xavier Cabrini has been canonized as a saint. She was the first American to be honored in that manor. She Died in 1917 of malaria. She established orphanages and covents in Paris, Madrid, London, Turin and many cities in Latin America. -
First Pilot Ejected
Larry Lambart was the first American to be ejected from an airplane. He was at 7,800 ft when ejected.He was a big time drinker! -
Truman Doctrine
The Truman doctrine was a policy created by President Harry Truman stating that the U.S. would support Turkey and Greece. The U.S. would help Turkey and Greece economically and military wise so they would not fall under the Soviets rule. Britain usually supported Greece but they were almost bankrupt so they called on the U.S. to support Greece. -

Jackie Robinson Broke the Line color line in baseball by being the first african american to play in the Majors. His batting avg. was .295 scoring 125 runs and stealing 29 bases. -
American nations sign defense pact
President Truman attended the Rio de Janerio Conference where the U.S. and 19 other Latin America countries signed the IATRA( Inter-america treaty of reciprical assistance. It stated that one armed attack against one state would be an attack against all american states. -
Apartheid
This was the racial segregation between blacks and whites in Africa. It was created by the National Party. Started after WWII by the Afrikaner-dominated National Party and Broederbond organizations. -
Marshall Plan
The Marshall plan was the American program to aid European countries that were damaged during WWII, and to help the prevention of the spread of communism. The plan operated for four years. The goals that the U.S. set were remove trade barriers, modernize industry, and make Europe prosperous again. -
Rail Strike Blockded
President Truman ended the strike threat by the nations rail workers. He ordered the government to seize the railroads. He allowed the army to operate the trains only. -
Berlin Airlift/Blockade
The USSR blocked all of the western railways, roads, and canal access to the sectors to Berlin. The goal was to make all Berlins allies to stop supporting them so the USSR would be the new supporter of Berlin. The airlift was when President Truman administration reacted with a continual daily airlift which brought much needed food and supplies into the city of West Berlin. -
Draft
President Truman signed the Selctive Service Act. It reinstated a peactime draft. It required all men fro the ages of 18 to 25 that they served 21 months in the Army. -
Mcdonalds
Taking their cue from self service retail stores, Richard and Maurice Mcdonald opened up a hamburger drive in. French fries were a dime, milk shaked 25 cents, and burgurs 15 cents. -
CIO
The congress of industrial organizations got rid of its communists albatross. John L. Lewis brought radicals into the CIO and had subjected the group to repeated attacks. -
Domino Theory
Existed form the 1950s to the 1980s. It was promoted by the U.S. at times. It stated that if one country would fall under the rule of communism then itd be a domino effect to the surrounding countries. -
US Helps France
The secretary of state Dean Acheson announced that the US is prepared to help the French defeat the spread of communism and Indochina. The US gave 10 million dollars in economic and militarty aid. -
Korean War
This was a war between North and South Korea. It was from the failure to hold free elections throughout the Korean Penninsula. The north had a communist government and the South had a right wing government. -
McAurthur
President Truman has appointed General Douglas MacAurthur to head the UNC in Korea. The President immeditaly turned to MacAurthur in World War II. -
Puerto Ricans
Two Puerto Ricans tried to kill President Truman. One gunman and officer was killed. It took place outside the Blair House, where the President stayed during the renovation of the White House. -
Dog Fight
The US won the first jet dog fight against North Korea. After evading heavy anti-aircraft fire, Lieutenant Brown and the other escorts were attacked by many Koreans at 18 thousand feet. -
Sugar Ray Robinson
Sugar Ray captured the Middle weight title. He was the five year welter weight champion and then added the middle weight title. He beat Jake LaMotta in the 13th round. -
Lynching
This was the first year the America went lynch free for a whole year. It stopped on its own without any congress passed lagislations. The declining lynching also decreased the numbers in the KKK. -
A Nation Under God
President Eisenhower signed a congressional resolution that altered the words of the Pledge of Alligiance adding the phrase under god.He also combined it with one nation, under god, indivisble. -
Albert Einstein
Albert Einstein died at the ge of 76. He loved the nature of light, to sail, and to play the violin. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1921 -
Minimum Wage
President Eisenhower signed an amendmant stating minimum wage workers will recieve a dollar instead of 75 cents. In 1938 the minimum wage was 40 cents. -
Vietnam War
Took place between Norht vietnam who was supported by communist allies, and the South Vietnam who was supported by the United States. The U.S. supported North vietnam because they wanted to prevent the spread of Communism. The North was supported by Viet Cong who was communist. -
Great Leap Foward
The great leap foward was a five year plan created by Mao to make China more modernized like America. It focused on the development of industry and agriculture. Communes were used for people to be placed in so they would not feel used. A commune was an area where people lived and was controlled by the government. The great leap foward was successful but had consequences as well such as death. -
OPEC
Is the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries. It was made to coordinate the oil producing countries policies. The goal is to secure a steady income to the member states and a secure supply of oil to the consumers. -
Bay of Pigs
Was an invasion of Cuba that was unsuccessful. The CIA armed the DRF and overthrow the government of Fidel Castro. When the invasion was launched from Guatamala Fidel Castro defeated the invading force. The invasion actually strentghned Castro's administration who was supported by the USSR. -
Tet Offensive
The tet offensive was military suprise attacks launched by North Vietnam against South Vietnam and the U.S. during a time when no attacks were supposed to be happening. It was named the tet offensive because it took place during the Tet Lunar New year holiday when the North and South agreed on a two day cease fire agreement. It suprised the South but they responded well and fired back. -
Watergate Scandal
Was a political scandal that happened in the U.S. and was a reult of the break-in at the Democratic National Committe. Led to the resignation of Pres. Nixon. The scandalresulted in the indictment, trial, conviction, and incarceration of forty-three persons, dozens of whom were Nixon's top administration officials. -
1972 Olympics
Israeli athletes and coaches taken hostage by terrorists from the Palestinian group Black September had been murdered. In the end, 17 people died during the Black September attack: six Israeli coaches, five Israeli athletes, five of the eight terrorists and one West German policeman. Three terrorists were captured, but were later released by the West Germans. -
Camp David Accords
Signed by Egyptian President Anwar El Sadat and Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin. It was focused on ending the disputes between Isreal and Arab countries eventually became a signing of peace between Isreal and Egypt. President Jimmy Carter also signed the treaties. -
Ali
Ali beat Leon Spinks and became the world heavy weight champion for the thrid time. Ali was 36 at the time. Spinks didnt train at all before the fight he instead disco danced all night long according to Bob Aru the promoter of the fight. -
Ayatollah Khomeini
He was a Iranian religious and political leader and in 1979 he made Iran the world first islamic republic. He was born in Kohmeyn in central Iran. He became a religious scholar and in the early 1920s rose to become an 'ayatollah', a term for a leading Shia scholar. He was looked on as a national hero. -
Iran hostage situation
a situation/crisis betwwen the U.S. and Iran when Iran held fifty-two Americans hostage. A group of Islamist students and militants supporting the Iranian Revolution took over the American Embassy in Tehran. It was taken as a blow to the U.S. -
Perestrokia and Glasnot
Was a political movement that was for the reformation of the Communist rule. Glasnot was for the opennes and transparency of the communism in the Soviet Union. -
Chicago
The first black man to be elected as the Mayor of Chicago was Harold Washington. He recieved 51 percent of the votes. There were more whites voting for Washington than blacks. -
Tianamen Square Massacre/Protests
The massacre was the causing of pain among thousands of civilians and unarmed citizens by troops with assault rifles and tanks. Most of the civilians were student demonstrators that had been there for seven weeks trying to block the military from entering the square. The Chinese govermnment banned any discussion or rememberance of the event. -
NAFTA
Stands for the North American Free Trade Agreement. Is an agreement signed by Canada, Mexico, and the United States, creating a trilateral trade bloc in North America. The goal of NAFTA was to eliminate barriers to trade and investment between the US, Canada and Mexico
