Churchill served as British Prime Minister through out the Cold War and a year after World War II started. -
Yalta Conference
The Yalta Conference was a meeting between Stalin (Soviet), Roosevelt (United States) and Churchill (Great Britain). -
Arms Race
The United States and the Soviet Union started what was called the Arms Race. They competed in building the best military first. The Soviet Union kept beating the US, while the US was just behind. -
United Nations
This was created so the member countries could increase in political and economic among other member countries. -
Truman Doctrine
A document stating that the US should help any countries threatened by the Soviet Union. -
Policy of Containment
The United Nations made a policy to keep communism from spreading. If a communist country wanted to expand and take over more land, the United Nations was there to stop them. -
Marshall plan
The US gave European countries $13 billion to help with the economy and rebuilt the war destroyed cities. -
Berlin Blockade
The Soviet Union wanted the little patch of land that the United States had in the Soviet Union Germany. So the Soviets made a blockade so no supplies can get in and no people can get out. The United States wasn't going to give up the land, this led into the Berlin Airlift. Planes were taking supplies to Berlin past the blockade. Planes were landing every second. The Soviets gave up and lifted the Blockade. -
COMECON
COMECON stands for Council of Mutual Economic Assistance. The Soviet Union created it against NATO. COMECON was created to also help the economy for any communist states. -
NATO
NATO stands for North Atlantic Treaty Organization. NATO was created for the US and Europe to have closer ties against the Soviet Union and Warsaw Pact. -
Hydrogen Bomb
The Hydrogen Bomb is kind of like the Nuclear bomb, but can do a lot more damage and kill a lot more people. The US created the Hydrogen bomb before the Soviet Union in the Arms Race. -
Eisenhower
He was an excellent commanding general during WWII. He led the massive invasion of the Nazi controlled Europe on D-day. He had a lot of good military accomplishments and this led to him winning the role of president. -
Krushchev
Krushchev was the Soviet leader after the great Stalin. He had created the term de-stalinization. It means to rid of some of Stalin's rules or restrictions. He was more negotiable and can see his way around things. -
Domino Theory
North Vietnam was communist and wanted to take South Vietnam, which was not communist. The United States directed most to all of its troops to south Vietnam to fight. The US believed if North took South, the neighboring countries would fall into communism too. Like dominoes. -
Warsaw Pact
It was created in another response to NATO. the Warsaw Pact was a military alliance formed out of the communist states. -
Hungarian Revolution
The Hungarian Revolution happened because the Hungarians wanted freedom from the Soviet Union. The Soviet Union easily crush the revolt and kept the Hungarians in line for the rest of the time they were with them. -
Sputnik
Russia launched Sputnik into space. They would be the first country to launch a man made thing into space. -
Fidel Castro
Castro was a communist that threw over the Cuban government. -
U2
U2 was a spy plane driven by Francis Gary Powers. It was shot down while flying over the Soviet Union and the pilot was captured and sentenced 10 years in a Soviet prison. -
John F. Kennedy
Kennedy became the youngest elected president. He was elected when he was 43 years old. He gave orders for war tensions between Cuba and made the call for Bay of Pigs. He was assassinated in 1963. -
Yuri Gagarin
Gagarin was the first man into space, accomplished by the Soviet Union. The Soviet Union, by that time, was winning the Arm Race. -
Bay of Pigs
The US used exiled Cubans from the US to fight at the Bay of Pigs. Cuba was storing Nuclear Missiles from the USSR, and in result of that, the Bay of Pigs was put into place. The battle was a major defeat for the US. -
Berlin Wall Built
The Soviet Union built a wall through east and west Germany so the East Germans, controlled by the Soviet Union, couldn't flee to West Germany, controlled by the US. -
Cuban Missile Crisis
The Soviet Union was bringing over nuclear missiles to Cuba because the US was trying to invade. President Kennedy ordered a naval blockade of Soviet Union ships carrying the missiles. The Soviet Union and US made an agreements: the US would stop trying to invade Cuba and the Soviets would bring the missiles back with them. -
Vostok 7
The first Multi-manned space craft to go into space. It went into space for eight days and cause for all of the other flights to be canceled because they were to focused on Vostok 7. -
Vietnamization
The US policy of withdrawing its troops and sending them to South Vietnam. North Vietnam wanted to take take over South Vietnam, North was communist and the US was trying to stop the spread of communism. -
Detente
The easing of hostility or strained relations. This term is mostly used between two or more countries. -
Perestroika
The policy or practice of restructuring or reforming the economic or political system. -
Glasnost
Glasnost means "openness". The Soviet Union, under a new leader, created this so people can have more power and freedom. The government no longer has control on everything. -
Berlin Wall Torn Down
The Soviet Union decided it was time to tear down the wall. They decided this mostly because the neighboring countries opened their borders and the East side Germans went around to West side.
