  • Truman Doctrine

    The Truman Doctrine was an American foreign policy that committed the United States to "support democracies against authoritarian threats." With the Truman Doctrine, President Harry S. Truman established that the United States would provide political, military and economic assistance to all democratic nations under threat from external or internal authoritarian forces.
  • Hollywood 10

    Directors, producers, and writers who were part of the 'Hollywood 10' and refused to testify before the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) faced termination or suspension. Convicted in federal court the following year, they were given sentences of six months to one year in prison.

  • Berlin's wall goes up

    The Socialist Unity Party began sealing the borders around West Berlin, first with barbed wire and a few days later with walls. It hopes the measure will end mass exodus to Berlin and stabilize its power and prove its sovereignty to the outside world.
