US spy plane was shot down over Soviet territory. The pilot was held in USSR for 2 years. This event increased tensions between the US and USSR during the Cold War. -
Berlin Wall Built
East Germany government began building the wall 1961 to stop the the massive flow of East Germans into West Berlin. This event caused a shorterm crsis in the Cold War that almost errupted into combat. -
Cuban Missile Crsis
For 13 days, Kennedy and Khrushchev were in a stand off. The Soviet Union had secretly been bring nuclear missiles into Cuba in order to protect them from another US invasion. The crisis ended with the US promising not to invade Cuba and with the USSR removing the missiles. The US also secretly promised to remove their Jupiter missles from Turkey in 6 months. -
Nixon visits China
President Nixon visits China to normalize relations. It was the first time a US president had ever visited the People's Republic of China and marked an end to 25 years of separtion. -
Berlin Wall Fell
