Marshall Plan
Marshall Plan was an aid package provided by the US to Western European countries that were damaged by WW2. This was provided so that countries wouldn't try to become communist in order to survive. This plan provided food and fuel to people in these countries and this plan also sent turbines and other industrial equipment needed to rebuild industry in Western Europe. -

Nato Established
NATO is a military alliance between many European countries and the US that was set up in order to prevent communist attacks on Europe and the US. The organization worked by making European countries allow the US to send troops to them in exchange for military protection in case the Soviets attacked. This build up of countries led to fierce competition to build nuclear weapons and other military systems during the Cold War. -
Korean War
The Korean war was between the countries North Korea set up by the Soviets and South Korea set up by the Americans where both side fought for control over the Korean peninsula. During the war South Korea lost land so the US engaged in battles to push the North Koreans North causing North Korea to lose territory. The Soviets provided aid to the North Koreans so they could push the South Koreans to 38th parallel. The Koreans decided to sign an armistice due to long stalemates. -
Berlin Wall constructed
The Berlin Wall was set up by the Soviet Union to surround West Berlin in order to prevent Western influence from entering the Soviet Union and also to stop Soviet citizens from traveling to West Berlin for better opportunities. Unfortunately this wall broke up many families that lived on both sides on the wall that could not see each other and it also cause a couple of crazy people to try to find ways around it. -
Soviet Invasion of Afghanistan
The Soviet invasion of Afghanistan was a disaster because it caused a nine year long civil war there and it also resulted in the Soviets having to hold a country together that didn want to be communist and resisted its rule. The war had strategic importance because Afghanistan was located close to India where there could still be British influence and also because Afghanistan was the first country to have diplomatic relations with the Soviet Union. -
Destruction of the Berlin Wall
The Berlin wall was taken down because Soviet officials in East Germany accidentally gave orders to stop patrolling the wall and this caused a bunch of excitement from many desperate people that wanted to see their families and have a better life. When the wall came down it greatly undermined Communist rule all over Europe and it caused the Soviet Union to eventually collapse about two years later and it also caused Germany to reunite into one country.
