    Berlin Airlift

    After WWII Germany was divided out to 4 allies. Berlin was deep in the Soviet’s zone but it was divided into 4 parts. The Soviets wanted the land all to themselves, so they closed all highways, railroads and canals coming in. Instead of retreating the U.S. and its allies supplied their sectors by air.

    Creation of NATO
    The North Atlantic Treaty Organization was formed when that treaty was signed. This was sign as a mutual defense agreement between North America and European states. So if an external country was to attack then one country would protect the other.

    Korean War

    North and South Korea claimed all of Korea but they each had different governments. This border dispute caused a war between the North and South. China backed North Korea and the United States backed South Korea. This created the separation zone today and they are technically still at war.

    The U.S., Spain, and other democratic countries created an alliance that was called the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). After this communist countries made a rival alliance called the Warsaw Pact.

    This was a war between north and south vietnam and it was supported by different countries in what was considered the cold war era.The north was supported by communist powers like the USSR and the south was supported by anti-communist countries like the United States.

    Sputnik
    Sputnik was the first artificial satellite that was launched by the Soviet Union. It was the size of a beach ball and it orbited Earth in about an hour and a half. This brought on the start of the space age.

    This was a physical and ideological wall that was built by eastern Germany in 1961 to divide the two sides of Berlin. This was to show that the democratic part of Berlin had no part to do with the fascist side.

    The Cuban missile crisis was a 12 day period when the U.S. and Soviet Union were closest to nuclear war. The Soviets had installed nuclear missiles in Cuba. USSR removed the missiles when the U.S. agreed not to invade Cuba

    The first man on the moon was named Neil Armstrong and he was on the mission of Apollo 11. They traveled through space on the Lunar Module and successfully landed.

    The Cold war was coming to an end and East Berlin’s spokesman said that they would change relations with west Berlin.He said east Berlin’s residents were free to cross into the western part. That night 2 million residents went to the wall with hammer beating it until the next day cranes came in to knock it down.
