The Padlock Law was created to protect itself from promotion of communism and bolshevism, and from communist propaganda. The Law was inspired by an ammendment in the Winnepeg General Strike, this ammendment stated that the federal government could charge people if they promoted revolution. -

Berlin Blockade
One of the first MAJOR crisis' of the Cold War. The Soviets try to cut off all supply lines to West Berlin in response to the French, British and Americans agreeing on a joined economy in Germany. The allies still managed to get to them by aircraft, although it was creating tension between the two sides. -
International Alliances: NATO
The North Atlantic Treaty Organization was created to protect countries from further Soviet aggression from countries behind the "iron curtan". Several Nations joined this organization including Belgium, Denmark, France, Canada, Iceland, Italy, Luxemberg, Netherlands, Norway, U.S.A, U.K and Portugal.. More Nations joined over the years. -
The Korean War
The Korean War began when some 75,000 soldiers from North Korea decided to attack the capitalist South Korea. The U.S.A. and the U.K. supported the south while the Soviets and the Chinese supported the North. Canada played a huge part in this war when they provided aid to the South which lead to a cease fire. In the end some 5 million soldiers and civilians lost their lives due to this war. -
UN Peacekeeping: The Suez Crisis and Pearson Nobel Prize
Egyptian government claims control of the Suez Canal that is being controlled by the French and the British but is on Egyptian land. Lester B. Pearson calls upon a meeting that needed to happen between all countries involved, he then bring up his idea of the UN peace-keeping. -
Continental Alliances: NORAD and DEW line
North American Air Defense Command was created and involved a promise between Canada and the U.S. to protect each other if necessary. Canada then gave permission to the U.S. to build a defence system in the Yukon that would detect any foreign aircraft or long range missiles, this was the DEW line (Distant Early Warning). -
Sputnik and Canadas Space Program
This was the first satelite to be launched ever, it was launched by the Soviets and brought a large advantage to the communist side. The rocket that was used to put Sputnik into orbit could have also delivered a nuclear bomb to anywhere in North America. Americans feared the Soviets advantage so they to made innovations and created ICBM's which were long range ballistic missiles. -
Avro Arrow Cancellation
Was thought to be the greates jet plane of all time, these jets were used for defense against the soviets but were stopped for no good reason. Alot of invested money had gone to waste and thousands of jobs were lost and left people angry due to the Avro Arrow Cancellation. -
Diefenbaker, Bomarc missiles and nuclear warheads in Canada
Prime Minister Diefenbaker approved and ordered ready made American Bomarc missiles for Canada's defence. However, he didn't allow nuclear warheads to enter Canada. -
The Cuban Missile Crisis
The United States Armed Forces were at thier highest state of readiness after news of Soviet missiles being spotted in Cuba. The U.S.A. put up a blockade around the entire island and if it were to be crossed by the Soviets, a nuclear war would have emerged. The Soviets obviously listened to their warnings. -
Draft Dodgers
During the Vietnam war, people back in the U.S. werent supporting the methods soldiers were using to try and defeat the enemy. This led to very low numbers of thos volunteering for becoming soldiers so the U.S. ordered mandatory conscription for only certain people. -
Canada-Soviet Summit Series
Canada claimed they were the best hockey nation and would'nt possibly lose with a team of the best Canadian NHL players after losing multiple International games to top European teams. Canada beat the Soviets and this gave the Canadians a huge sense of pride during the Cold War. -
The Fall of The Berlin Wall
The wall that seperated East Berlin from West Berlin was officially destroyed in 1989 marking the end of seperation between the capitalist and communist people that occupied Germany. -
The Fall of The Soviet Union
With the resignation of President Mikhail Gorbachev, the worlds first and largest communist state was ended. The Soviet flag was lowered from Kremlin and replaced with the Russian Tricolour. 15 countries were now their own independant states.
