    Venona Papers

    This involved over 50 American people, the United Stats Government, and the Soviet Union. This was a counter intelligence program initiated by the U.S. Army Signal Intelligence Service. These papers and the program attempted to decrypt messages sent by the Soviet Union Intelligence agencies to try and expose Amercian people assisting the Russians.
  • Iron Curtain

    Iron Curtain
    This was a physical boundary dividing Europe into two seperate areas. This was originally not a physical wall, at first, Winston Churchill spoke about it metaphorically and talked about this "wall" symbolically. This was until Stalin had this wall literally built to seperate Communists Eastern Europe from Capitalists Western Europe.

    Involving the United States and the Soviet Union, this was the geopolitical, ideological, and economic struggle between the U.S. and the USSR. It was also the growth of mass destructive weapons, and a clash between Capitalism and Communism. No specific location since there was no actual combat, hense the "Cold" War. This war was basically to dominate international affairs and decades.

    The U.S. gave $13 Billion in economic support to help rebuild Western European economies after the end of WWII. This involved the U.S., Greece, Turkey and Europe. This happened to help reorganize the European economy and to provide a more congenial environment for American investment.

    Berlin Blockade and Airlift

    U.S. British and Soviet Military forces divided and occupied Germany. Berlin was located far inside Soviet controlled Germany. This event took place to avoid a World War III. Truman ordered a massive airlift of supplies into West Berlin. This event involved Soviet Union, Western Allied Powers, Western Berlin, Germany.
  • McCarthyism

    McCarthyism
    U.S. Sentator Joseph McCarthy rose to national prominence by initiating a probe to ferret out communists holding prominent positions. In Wheeling, West Virginia, McCarthy proclaimed that he was aware of 205 card-carrying members of the communist Party who worked for the U.S. department of State.
  • Korean War

    Korean War
    North Korean army crossed 38th parallel and invaded South Korea who were non-communist. They came in armed with heavy tanks, and quickly over ran South Korea. The United States came to aid South Korea in Korea. This was also another attempt at avoiding a WWIII. The U.S. got involved under the auspices of the United Nations. North Korea wanted control of South Korea.
  • Rosenberg Trials

    Rosenberg Trials
    This a one month trial for Ethel and Julius Rosenberg. It ended April 4th with conviction for all the defendents. Rosenberg's sentenced to death row on April 6th in the New York Southern District Federal Court. The couple was accused of selling nuclear secrets to the Russians.

    Sputnik
    The Soviet Union successfully launched Sputnik 1, the world's first artificial sattelite. This happened in Soviet Union(Russia). They did this to usher new political, military, technological and scientific developments.
  • Bay of Pigs Invasion

    Bay of Pigs Invasion
    This was a plan to destroy Castro's tiny air force. Castro unfortunately knew and chaos broke out at the attempt of the plan.In Cuba, Castro's troops pinned invaders on the beach and exiles surrendered. Again, actions were made due to Kennedy's plan to attack Castro's air force.
