    Vietnam War

    When the Vietnamese gained their independence from France, they would have elected their new president, Ho Chi Minh. Ho Chi Minh was a supporter of communism and also the leader of the independence movement. Backed by a few hundred military advisers from the US, anti-communist leaders took control of Southern Vietnam. Communist rebels attacked Southern Vietnam waging a guerilla war. Kennedy increased the number of military advisers in Vietnam to 16,000.
