United Nations Formed
The United Nations was formed to keep international peace. After World War 2, 51 countries joined the UN to keep peace and protect freedom. -
Truman Doctrine
President Truman declared that we as a nation should stop the spread of communism and help countries resist it. The US gave millions of dollars to Turkey and Greece so they wouldn't turn soviet. -
Hollywood 10
The Hollywood 10 were 10 men in the film industry who refused to answer questions that would find out if they were communists, or have ever been part of the communist party. They were sentenced to one year in jail. -
Marshall Plan
The Marshall Plan, named after Secretary of State George Marshall, was signed off by President Truman and suggested that the US give economic assistance to European countries post ww2, after all the destruction. This also put the US in a good light, which helped resist communism in Europe. -
NATO formed
NATO is an international organization created during the beginning of the Cold War. It ensures nations across North America and Europe safety and freedom. This was pretty big for the cold war because it secured countries through an alliance against the soviet union. -
The Korean War
The Korean War was a proxy war of the Cold War, fought between communist North Korea, which was supported by the Soviets, and South Korea, supported by the US. Though tensions between the two Koreas existed for years before, the war didn't actually start until North Korea invaded the South. The US supplied the South with troops, supplies, and money. It ended in a stalemate, with the two Koreas separated, becoming two different countries. -
US enters Vietnam War
As communism spread over Asia, the US gradually became terrified that it was going to take over. So in 1955, President Eisenhower sent military assistance to Vietnam, and this is where US involvement began. The United States sent money, advisers, and supplies to help South Vietnam win against North Vietnam (the communist side). North Vietnam gained control of the south, and Vietnam became a Communist country. US involvement officially ended when President Nixon signed the Paris Peace Accords. -
Bay of Pigs
The Bay of Pigs was an attempt at an invasion by the US in Cuba to overthrow Fidel Castro, Cuba's communist leader at the time, and get rid of communism in Cuba. President Kennedy launched the invasion, but in the end, it failed. Men on each side died. -
Berlin Wall goes up
The communist government put up the Berlin Wall to stop their citizens from leaving. It also prevented the outsiders from coming in and invading and having an influence on communist people. -
Soviets Invade Afghanistan
In 1979, the soviets sent thousands of troops to Kabul and took over complete political and military control. They wanted to expand communism. -
Berlin Wall comes down
The Berlin Wall came down in 1989, symbolizing an end to the cold war, though it didn't mean the physical end. People were finally allowed to cross the border, and uniting east and west Germany. -
Space Race/Sputnik
The Space Race was a competition between the United States and the Soviet Union for who could achieve space exploration first. The Space Race started when the USSR launched Sputnik, the first satellite to go into space. This competition further advanced tensions between the two rivals of the Cold War, and also created new advancements in technology, while boosting the economies of each country.
