United Nations
The UN was declared by Presidents Roosevelt on January 1, 1942. The UN formed because the league of nations failed. The UN had 26 representative nations that pledges their government to continue fighting against the axis power. -
Iron Curtain
The iron curtain was an imaginery line that divided east and west Europe. The iron curtain seperated countries of commnism and non- communist from the end of WWII in 1945 until the end of Cold War in 1991. Satellite nations were formed in East Europe to follow the Soviets policies while the West were free. The iron curtain led to the berlin airlift because the wall was built. -
Joseph McCarthy
Joseph was a Republican U.S senator from Wisconsin. He proclaimed that communists were a danger both at home and abroad. McCarthy accused people of being communist even if they werent, and ruin their reputation. This was known as McCarthyism. -
Truman Doctrine and Containment
The Truman Doctrine was a policy stating that the U.S would support Greece and Turkey with ecomic and military aid to stop them from falling into the hands of the Soviets. The containment policy was to stop Soviet expansion. In result of helping Greece and Turkey, the Soviet Union was no longer a wartime allie. People often thought this was the start of the Cold War. -
Berlin Airlift
In June 1948, the Soviet Union attempted to control all of Berlin by surface traffic to and from West Berlin. The point was to starve the population so the Soviet Uniont would have control of West Berlin. In response, the U.S. started flying planes in and out, loaded with supplied, until the government allowed surface traffic back into West Berlin. -
Marshall Plan
The plan was to give aid from the U.S. to Europe. It's also known as ERP, European Recovery Program. After WWII Europes economy was damaged severely, so the U.S. helped rebuild Europes economy in order to prevent the spread of communism. The Marshall Plan helped the industrial and agriculture production, even the standards of living increased. The Marshall Plan led to the Berlin Airlift because they were both ways to help Europe rebuild their economies. -

Korean War
The Korean War was a war between North and South Korea. The cause of the war was because Korea as a whole failed to hold free elections throughout the Korean Peninsula in 1948, which did not help the division. The North established a communist government, and the South established a democratic government. -
Space Race
The race was a competition between the Soviet Union and the United States. The race was to see who could make the furthest advancments into space first. In conclsuin of the race, USSR launched the first satellite on October 4, 1957, which was known as Sputnik 1. -
Sputnik
Sputnik was the first satellite to be launched by the Soviet Union. Sputnik was created because of the Space Race between the USSR and the U.S. This satellite began the Space Age. The launch caused new political, military, technological, and scientific developments. -
Vietnam War
This war lasted from November 1, 1955 to April 30, 1975. It started because Vietnam divided into two, north was communist and south was democratic. The north tried to run a campaign throughout south Vietnam. He was trying to get the South to follow communist rules. -
CIA
The CIA was the Central intelligent agency. Preisdent Eisenhower authorized the CIA to secretly train and arm Cuban exiles. -
Bay of Pigs
The Bay of Pigs invasionwas an unsuccssful military invasion of Cuba. Cuba's alliance with the Soviet's worried the Americans, so cuban exiles trained with the CIA for the invasion. The invasion was intended to ignite a popular uprising against Casto. The failed invasion strengthened the position of Catro's administration and ties with the USSR. Leading to the Cuban Missile Crisis because Khrushchev believed the U.S was too weak to oppose Soviet expansion into Cuba. -
Cuban Missile Crisis
The Cuban Missile Crisis was one of the major confrontaations of the cold war, and it almost caused the Cold war to turn into a nuclear conflict. It doumented as the first threat of mutual assured destruction. The Cuban Missle Crisis happened because Cuba felt that Americans domination was a problem. On October 27, Kennedy agrred to remove all missiles as long as Cuba did the same. -
Hawks and Doves
Hawks were people who supported the war and doves were against the war. The terms were used world wide during the Vietnam War.
