  • Postdam Conference

    Postdam Conference
    From July 17 to August 2, 1945, Allied leaders met outside of Berlin.The Soviet Union gathered to demand the surrender of Japan and set up a framework for postwar Europe. Each leader was trying to get the strongest position and the most influence for his own country, but the countries fell into two camps. The Potsdam Conference set up a competition between capitalist Western powers and the communist-controlled Soviet Union. This rivalry grew into the Cold War.
  • Korean War

    Between 1939-45 Japan controlled Korea.In 1948 the soviets took over in the north and the U.S took over in the south. The United Nations wanted to put the two back together, but the soviets refused. June 25,1950 north korea attacked the southward across the 38th parallel,they then fought in war from June 1950-July 1953. The war took 1.3 million south korean lives,1 million chinese, 5 hundred thousand north koreans, and 37,000 Americans, plus korea remained divided.
  • NATO/Warsaw Pact

    NATO/Warsaw Pact
    n 1955 the Soviet Union wanted to establish a strong defense alliance against any potential military or threats from the west, especially Germany being a member of NATO. The soviet union was then alarmed by the integrated military force which they then created the Warsaw Pact. The Warsaw pact was a security alliance made up of the soviet satellites. By 1959 the Berlin wall and reunited Germany which caused the Warsaw pact to fall and be apart from NATO in 1991.
  • Vietnam War

    In order for South Vietnam to stop North vietnam from reuniting the country under communism they fought in which was know as the vietnam war. It began in 1957. The U.S even attempted to help South Vietnam. Although there were certain allies in 1974 north vietnam won the war and south vietnam made them whole. Within this war 13 million vietnamese soldiers and about 58,000 U.s Troops were killed, more than 2 million civilians dead.
  • Suez Crisis

    On July 26,1956,Nasser nationalized the Suez canal. Nassar did that in reaction to Britain and America´s decision to not finance Egypt construction of the Aswan High Dam. Nassar then declared martial law. On October 29, 1956, 10 Israeli brigades invaded egypt while britain and france declared that the withdraw or they would use cease fire tactics. After this battle Nassar was well know as a hero/victor for the cause of Arab & Egyptian nationalism.
  • Sputnik/Space Race

    On October 4, 1957, the soviet union launched the Sputnik- 1( earth's first artificial satellite). Since the Soviets were successful the U.S military's fear was that they had fallen behind when developing technology. In result the launch intensified the race and raise of the Cold War tensions. In the end the launch turned the fear of falling behind into U.S policymakers creating space and weapon programs. This meant both countries were advancing with research and technology.

    The soviet union secretly kept nuclear weapons stationed on the island of Cuba. In 1962 the U.S and soviet union then had a 13 day argument. There was no war so the impact did not cause lives. It was therefore all resolved within the last second.

    Mikhail S. Gorbachev stepped on the world stage, March 1985 as the new leader of the USSR, this also showed the he was different from those before him. His plan was to rebuild the Soviet Union and up to speed like Japan, Germany and the United States.
