Russia Declares war on Japan
This is important becasue Russia was attacking Japan at a time when they didnt see Russia as a real threat so there was a lot of deaths caused because they were not prepared. -
The Truman Doctrine
The Truman Doctrine was established to help countries that have a democracy. The U.S. will provide political, military, and economic assistance to countries in need. This was important because it helped Greece when the Soviets were trying to take over. -
Truman's Loyalty Program
Truman decides to look for Soviet spies within the government. -
NATO
North Atlantic Treaty Organization was established by the U.S. and 11 other nations to create a defense pact to contain Soviet aggresion against Western Europe. -
KGB
The Komitet Gosudarstvennoi Bezopanosti of the Soviet Union is known as the KGB. This was the largest spy and security commitee. They were designed to gather intelligence in other nations. -
Warsaw Pact
This is similar to the NATO but with Russia and seven other parts of Europe establishing Soviet in command of all armed forces. -
Sputnik
Soviet launces satelite into orbit. This causes panic for the U.S. and they quickly get moving on creating their own satelite. -
Berlin Wall
The wall was built to keep the westerns from entering east Gearmany. -
SALT I signed
Strategic Arms Limitation Talks (SALT). This was a meeting between the U.S. and Soviet to curb the cold war arms race. -
Poland becomes Independant
This is significant because it is the start of the fall of the Soviet. It shows other countries that it is possible and is intended to inspire them to follow. -

The head of East Germany allowed citizens to cross as they pleased. The Berlin Wall is on of the most powerful and well known symbols of the Cold War. -
Germany Reunited
West Germany had been suffering from citizens leaving because of the Cold War and what they stood for. When they reunited it was a big deal. Many see this as an End to the Cold War. -
End of the Cold War
The fall of the Soviet Union ended the Cold War. Countries that were forced into the Soviet Union were able to be free. This was seen as a victory for Freedom in the West.
