1945 - Post War
Franklin Roosevelt, Winston Churchill, and Joseph Stalin gather together at the Yalta Conference in Crimea Russia. In conference, the three leaders decide what should happen with post war Europe. -
1949 - NATO
North Atlantic Treaty Organization is founded by Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, the United Kingdom, and the United States to resist help Europe from the expansion of Communism from the Soviet Union. -
1950's - Korean War
The UN send military forces to North Korea for the first time. In an attempt to stop them from going south, they failed. -
New Start?
Eisenhower became president of the US, and Stalin dies a couple of months later leaving struggle in Soviet Union. NATO debate on new start on the Soviet Nation. -
1955 - Baghada Pact
Iran, Iraq, Pakistan, Turkey, and the UK formed the Baghdad Pact in commitment to resisting the Communism expansion in the Middle East. Few months later Germany joins the NATO and the Warsaw Pact is founded in Eastern Europe and included: East Germany, Czech, Poland, Hungary, Romania, Albania, Bulgaria, and the Soviet Union. -
1957 - Esienhower Doctrine
Eisenhower signs the Eisenhower Doctrine commits the US to defending Iran, Pakistan, and Afghanistan from Communist influence. Later into the year in November, US reviews nation's defense readiness and notice that they're falling far behind from Soviets missile capabilities, then starting campaign to build fallout shelters. Later, Soviet Union claims to have missile superiority over the US. -
1962 - Cuban MIssile Crisis
In Jan. 20, 1961, John F Kennedy was elected president. In Aug. 17, the US begins Alliance for Progress to aid Latin America (esp. Puerto Rico). "October 31: The Soviet Union detonates the Tsar Bomba, the most powerful thermonuclear weapon ever tested, with an explosive yield of some 50 megatons." In Oct. 16, 1962, we have the Cuban Missile Crisis. Soviets installed military bases that were armed with nuclear missiles that were only 90 miles away from US land. Nuclear war nearly broke out. -
1972/1979 - SALT Treaties
On May 26,1972, the SALT I Treaty limited all existing land ICBM's that were in range of northeastern continental US borders and northwestern continental USSR borders and provided both sides (US & Soviet Union), with submarine-launched ballistic missiles.
In 1979, the SALT II Treaty banned any and all new missile programs so both the US and USSR were forced them to limit their new strategic missile type development. -
1989 - Berlin Wall
After a Soviet reforms allow Eastern Europe to change their Communist governments, the Berlin Wall gets becomes breached when a man mistakenly informs a news conference that the borders between East and West Europe are open. Later in 1990, on Oct 3, the Berlin Wall finally comes down.
